Review : The Bhootnii : Supernatural Suspense!
The film opens at Delhi’s St. Vincent College of Arts and Culture, where a popular rumour surrounds a mysterious “Virgin Tree.” According to legend, if someone places a photo of their loved one on the tree and performs a Pooja on Valentine’s Day, they’ll be granted true love.
Shantanu (#SunnySingh), heartbroken after being dumped on Valentine’s Day, drunkenly visits the tree and cries out, “Mujhe meri mohabbat lauta do!” And with that, the story begins. Shantanu lives with his two roommates Sahil (#Beyounick) and Naseem (#AasifKhan) all equally unlucky in love. Where Shantanu still clings to the idea of sacchi mohabbat (true love). As Valentine’s Day approaches, so do the college rituals. Ananya (#PalakTiwari), who had mysteriously vanished six months earlier, suddenly returns. Together, she and Shantanu performs the ritual. She places his photo on the tree, and he leaves a note that says “Sacchi Mohabbat.” Unbeknownst to them, the Bhootni watches.
Things take a darker turn when a student dies by suicide. Whispers of a curse begin to spread, but the college denies everything. To investigate, they bring in Baba (#SanjayDutt), a legendary ghostbuster. He explains that ghosts with green eyes are harmless but red-eyed spirits bring disaster.
The mystery intensifies around Holi ka Dahan (Chhoti Holi), the day when tragedy often strikes echoing vibes of Bhool Bhulaiyaa. As Holi nears, Mouni Roy enters as Mohabbat, who enchants Shantanu and helps him fall in love again. But she’s not who she seems. The film then unravels her tragic backstory how she became the Bhootnii and why she seeks revenge.
The film is packed with humour, thanks largely to Sahil (Beyounick), whose comedic timing and charm light up the screen. He brings his signature online energy into the film seamlessly. Sunny Singh balances emotional depth and horror with ease, while Sanjay Dutt exudes his classic charisma, commanding attention every time he appears.
Palak Tiwari, despite limited screen time, makes a strong impression. She handles emotional scenes with grace and leaves you wanting more.
Visually, the film impresses. The cinematography heightens the suspense and supports the emotional beats. The music from romantic interludes to the powerful Tandav adds to the atmosphere and stays with you after the credits roll. While there are moments that echo films like Stree, the inspirations are woven into the narrative in a way that feels respectful rather than repetitive.
Director #SidhaantSachdev infuses The Bhootnii with a refreshing energy, crafting a confident and well-paced narrative that strikes a perfect balance between fun and fear. While the film draws on familiar horror-comedy tropes, Sidhaant adds his unique touch, making it an engaging watch that delivers laughs, chills, and unexpected emotional depth. The transitions from humor to heartfelt moments are seamless, keeping the audience fully invested.
