Review : Mayasabha : Fun Psychic Thriller!
Mayasabha is a fun psychic thriller that’s worth a one-time watch. Directed by Uday Raj, the film maintains a steady pace throughout. It stars Javed Jaffrey as the sharp and intimidating Parmeshwar Khanna, who built an old, abandoned theatre years ago. Javed shines with his cool screen presence and biting sarcasm, effortlessly stealing every scene he appears in.
The story begins with Vasu showing his friend RavRana around the theatre. Vasu has no real friends, so he is overly excited to have someone to talk to. He shares the theatre’s history and reveals that he is Parmeshwar’s only son. He then mentions that Parmeshwar once hid 40 kg of gold inside the building but later forgot where it was hidden. Even Vasu doesn’t know the exact spot.
Sensing an opportunity, RavRana teams up with his sister Zeenat. Pretending to be Vasu’s friends, they visit the house for dinner. Parmeshwar grows suspicious and questions their true intentions. RavRana slips up and mentions the word “gold.” Parmeshwar merely smirks and says, “Many people came here with knives and guns to find it. But a smile is the deadliest weapon. Search and take it if you can.”
The film then explores what follows—do they manage to find the gold? While the plot is fairly predictable and doesn’t offer major surprises, it remains engaging. The cinematography stands out, with dark and tense visuals adding to the mood. The dialogues are sharp and gritty, feeling raw and realistic, supported by strong performances—especially Javed Jaffrey’s commanding portrayal of Parmeshwar.
Overall, Mayasabha is a decent one-time watch for those who enjoy simple, atmospheric thrillers.
