Rajkumar Hirani Reveals How 3 Idiots Sequel Picks Up the Story 20 Years Later!

Rajkumar Hirani is one of the most acclaimed filmmakers in Indian cinema, having delivered some of the industry’s most celebrated films that have gone on to become timeless classics. One of his most loved films, 3 Idiots, remains one of the biggest films in Indian cinema, not just for its compelling story and memorable performances but also for its powerful message and the way it resonated with audiences across generations.
Recently, the makers announced the film’s sequel, which will see a major leap in the timeline while bringing back the same beloved characters. The director recently revealed how the sequel takes place 20 years later with the same characters and where the story picks up.
Rajkumar Hirani shared, “It’s all the same characters; all of them are the same characters. It’s like a time leap, like ‘What are they doing now?’ It’s “3 Idiots” 20 years later, so what’s happened is that these characters have grown older. They are not in college anymore, they are in their professions, married, with kids, and now we see what happens in their lives.”
3 Idiots brought together an acclaimed ensemble cast including Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Boman Irani, and Mona Singh. The film struck a chord with audiences through its heartfelt narrative, unforgettable friendships, and thought-provoking take on education system.
It emerged as a global phenomenon, earning over ₹400 crore worldwide, while its remarkable performance in China saw it outgross Avatar, cementing its place among the most iconic and influential Indian films ever made.
Meanwhile, Rajkumar Hirani is set to make his much-awaited streaming debut with Pritam And Pedro. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Avinash Arun, the series is created and produced by Hirani, bringing his signature storytelling to the digital space for the first time. Pritam And Pedro premieres on JioHotstar on July 3.
