As Mirzapur: The Film prepares to bring one of India’s most iconic fictional universes to the big screen, actor Shweta Tripathi is reflecting on the incredible evolution of the franchise. What began as a gritty crime drama on streaming has grown into a massive cultural phenomenon, with its characters, dialogues, and plotlines seamlessly weaving into pop culture. For Shweta, the upcoming feature film is not just the next chapter in the story, but a groundbreaking milestone for Indian entertainment as streaming originals expand onto the theatrical stage.
“When we started shooting Mirzapur almost eight years ago, none of us could have predicted the journey it would take. As actors, you hope your work connects with people, but very rarely does a show become part of everyday conversations, memes, celebrations and even the language people use. Mirzapur did that. It made us their Guddu Bhaiya and Golu Didi. Today, people don’t just watch the show, they care about the characters and root for them.”
The announcement of Mirzapur: The Film marks a landmark moment for Indian cinema, making it one of the first major domestic streaming franchises to adapt into a full-scale feature film. According to Shweta, this jump to the silver screen is a direct result of the relentless love and emotional investment audiences have shown the series over the years.

For Shweta, the film also signifies the continuation of Golu Gupta’s deeply complex arc—a character she has portrayed for nearly a decade. From an idealistic student to one of the most ruthless power players in Purvanchal, Golu’s evolution has struck a chord with viewers, particularly young women who see strength in her vulnerability, flaws, and defiance.
“What makes me particularly emotional is Golu’s journey. I’ve lived with her for years. She began as a young woman who believed in doing the right thing and gradually transformed into someone navigating power, grief, revenge and ambition. Directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, Mirzapur: The Film is produced by Excel Entertainment and presented by Amazon MGM Studios. Starring Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Jitendra Kumar, and Shweta Tripathi, the action crime thriller is slated for a grand theatrical release on September 4, 2026.
