Resident Evil Director Zach Cregger Weighs In On Horror’s Success At The Box Office!
As the horror genre continues to surprise audiences and find success at the box office, Resident Evil director Zach Cregger shares his excitement about being part of an arena where anything can happen.
From the mind of visionary filmmaker Zach Cregger (Barbarian, Weapons) comes a thrilling—and terrifying—reinvention of the Resident Evil franchise. In an all-new story, Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos.
With horror continuing to find a strong connection with audiences and deliver unexpected experiences at the box office, Cregger believes the genre is currently one of the most exciting spaces for filmmakers. The director feels that horror has retained the ability to surprise audiences, offering filmmakers the freedom to explore unpredictable stories and take viewers into territories they may not see coming.
“I just feel like for whatever reason right now, horror feels like anything can happen with it. It feels like one of the last kind of pockets, not last but a very healthy pocket for something that is gonna be surprising. Obsession, I’ve never seen anything like that before. It’s so cool and I am just excited to be playing in that arena. It just feels like I can go and be surprised at the movies and that is refreshing. I think Godspeed, let’s keep going,” said Zach Cregger while speaking to Fox News.
For Cregger, it is this sense of unpredictability that makes horror particularly refreshing at the moment. The genre continues to give filmmakers the opportunity to create experiences where audiences can walk into a theatre without knowing exactly what is waiting for them, keeping the theatrical experience both thrilling and unpredictable.
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil is set to release in cinemas on September 18, 2026. The highly anticipated horror survival thriller will release in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
