Resident Evil: Critics Hail Zach Cregger’s Film as Unpredictably ‘Wild’ and One of the ‘Best Video Game Adaptations’

Scheduled for release on September 18 in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, the new Resident Evil feature stars Austin Abrams in the lead and is helmed by acclaimed Barbarian and Weapons director #ZachCregger.

Resident Evil has impressed international critics! The film, set to release in theatres on 18th September, is helmed by Weapons and Barbarian director Zach Cregger. A massive fan of the video games, Cregger has brought his horror flair to the franchise with the new Resident Evil film. And it seems to have worked well with audiences who watched it as part of the film’s global premiere in LA. Several attendees, including critics, have praised the film, calling it one of the best video game adaptations of all time.

Courtney Howard called the film ‘wild’ in a post shared on X. “#ResidentEvil: Zach Cregger is cookin’ with napalm. It’s a wild, hilarious, unpredictably bonkers thrill ride from start to finish. Kinetic action leans heavily on demented body horror. Mutant mayhem galore! Austin Abrams is perfect as our doofy, hapless hero,” she said.

Jonathan Sim called the film an ‘edge of the seat experience’, praising Cregger’s best film yet. His post read, “#ResidentEvil is a PHENOMENAL edge-of-your-seat experience. Zach Cregger’s best movie yet. It shines in its simplicity. A one-night thriller about one person trying to survive. Austin Abrams brings so much comedy to this role. Funny, exciting, and demands to be seen with a crowd.”

Zach Pope shared a similar opinion. “#ResidentEvil is a near PERFECT Resident Evil experience! Zach Cregger didn’t just craft a GREAT Resident Evil movie (he made an awesome video game adaptation that I can already see myself rewatching for years) Brutal. Funny. Gory. Completely WTF-inducing. It’s packed with dread, jump scares, Easter eggs, & most importantly, some INCREDIBLE creature designs. This movie starts at 30 MPH and somehow keeps shredding through the gears until it’s flying at 200. It’s lean, it’s mean, it’s absolutely insane, and it’s almost everything I wanted from a Resident Evil movie. WHAT A RIDE!” he wrote.

Mark Cassidy also dubbed the film as one of the best video game adaptations. “#ResidentEvil may not feature recognizable characters/storylines, but by tapping into the relentless tension of the games, Zach Cregger has actually delivered the most faithful take yet. Very bloody, very funny, and it made me jump at least 3 times (no easy task). The fella sitting in front of me hid behind his jacket for most of the movie. Easily among the best video game adaptations I’ve seen,” he said.

Eric Goldman added, “Resident Evil is a blast! Unrelenting once it gets going. Super freaky and intense, but also really funny. Evokes playing a video game (and moving through different levels) in a really fun way and Austin Abrams is incredibly enraging and likable as a very everyman hero.”

From Columbia Pictures and Constantin Film, in association with TriStar Pictures, Resident Evil hits theatres on 18th September, 2026. Distributed by Sony Pictures Entertainment India, the film releases in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
