While the casting naturally carries an element of nostalgia, there is more to the decision than simply bringing back a familiar face. As per an independent source, The makers were conscious of the emotional connect Arun Govil continues to share with audiences and felt that seeing him return to Ramayana in an entirely different role would be particularly special.
“When you have an actor who has been associated with Ram for so many generations, there is an instant emotional connect with him. The thought behind casting Arunji as Dashrath was not just about nostalgia. The makers also felt audiences would enjoy seeing him return to the world of Ramayana in a completely different role. There was something very organic about bringing him back into this story, but this time as the father of Ram. It makes for a beautiful full-circle moment; the actor who defined Ram for an entire generation now playing Rama’s father,” shares the source.
The casting thus creates an interesting bridge between the Ramayana audiences grew up watching and the new cinematic interpretation being mounted for a new generation. Govil’s presence brings an instant familiarity to the world, while his role as Dashrath allows audiences to see the veteran actor in a completely different avatar.
In Ramayana, Ranbir Kapoor takes on the role of Lord Rama, with Sai Pallavi as Sita and Rocking Star Yash as Ravana. The film also features Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, with Govil stepping into the pivotal role of Dashrath.
