‘Abhang Tukaram’ – Bringing the Eternal Words of Sant Tukaram Maharaj to the Silver Screen!
For the Marathi people, Dnyaneshwari by Sant Dnyaneshwar and the Abhang Gatha by Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj hold an unparalleled place of honor. While Moulis’ Dnyaneshwari laid the spiritual foundation of Maharashtra, Sant Tukaram’s soulful abhangs adorned it with divine grace. Tukobaraya’s Abhang Gatha emerged stronger after enduring the trials imposed by the rigid social systems of the time, and even today it stands as a pillar of moral and spiritual guidance.
Centuries later, verses from this Gatha still live on in the daily speech of Marathi people — in the form of sayings, proverbs, and poetic lines. Even after 350 years, Sant Tukaram continues to inspire and dwell among us through his immortal creations.
To take this philosophy to the younger generation, acclaimed filmmaker Digpal Lanjekar is bringing a brand-new cinematic experience titled Abhang Tukaram, set to release on November 7. The film is presented by Panorama Studios.
The movie depicts one of the most emotionally stirring and historically significant episodes from #SantTukarams life — when the religious custodians of the time ordered that his Abhang Gatha be drowned in the Indrayani River. Tukaram calmly accepted the challenge and submerged his writings in the waters. But how did these sacred verses resurface? What message did this miraculous event convey? And what sacrifices did society make out of sheer devotion and love for Sant Tukaram? ‘Abhang Tukaram’ promises to portray these moments with both thrilling drama and deep emotion.
The recently unveiled motion teaser shows this visually striking moment — sheets of abhangs floating upward along with the river’s ripples, while a silhouetted Sant Tukaram stands with his arms raised toward the sky. In the background, the rising sun casts rays of hope, accompanied by a soulful choral rendition of his timeless composition “Jethe Jato Tethe Tu Maza Sangati”. The visuals culminate with the grand title Abhang Tukaram forming across the sky, underlining the eternal nature of the saint’s creations.
The story and dialogues are penned by noted writer Yogesh Soman, while Digpal Lanjekar — known for his deep study of the Warkari tradition in his earlier film Sant Dnyaneshwaranchi Muktai — handles the screenplay and direction. Music, the soul of any such film, plays a vital role here, with the inclusion of ten classic abhangs. The soundtrack is composed by acclaimed singer–music director Avadhoot Gandhi, who had earlier delivered a memorable musical score for Sant Dnyaneshwaranchi Muktai.
With its rich spiritual theme, epic visuals, and soul-stirring music, Abhang Tukaram is set to be a deeply moving cinematic tribute to the eternal words of the saint — one that promises to resonate with audiences across generations.
