She rose to national fame with her powerful portrayal of wrestler Geeta Phogat in Aamir Khan’s #Dangal (2016), earning critical acclaim and mass recognition. Known for her versatility, Fatima has since explored a range of characters in films like Ludo, Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari, Ajeeb Daastaans, and Thar. She’s also appeared in OTT projects that showcase her depth as an actor. Fatima is often praised for choosing unconventional, emotionally layered roles that resonate with the audience. Her recent performances in Laal Saree further solidify her reputation as a performer with both charm and substance. With each project, she continues to evolve, balancing mainstream appeal with strong storytelling. Here she is seen intetacting with our Sr Editor Keerti Kadam as her new film #AapJaisaKoi is ready for release.

Fatima you’re appearing on both OTT and the big screen this month. Does that excite you or add pressure?

Fatima: Oh, I feel incredibly lucky! Aap Jaisa Koi marks my first proper love story, and I’m honestly more excited than pressured. Audiences today are craving something soft, tender, and emotionally real—we’ve all had our share of dark thrillers and heavy action. Even I don’t feel like watching them anymore. As for Metro, that’s Dada’s (Anurag Basu’s) canvas. His stories are nuanced, his characters unforgettable. He carries the weight of the film because his writing ensures every actor shines. He’s that rare kind of filmmaker whose actors are never told they underperformed—he simply brings out the best in us. And yes, his scripts are always ready… he just prefers to keep them a mystery!

Aap Jaisa Koi feels understated and intimate. Were there any challenges while working on it?

Fatima: Honestly, not at all. The script was written with such clarity and elegance that the challenges felt minimal. Vivek is a director who creates a peaceful space, even when making a romantic film. The set had a warm, calm energy—nothing chaotic. And working with Madhavan was so smooth—he’s as charming off-camera as he is on. You can sense the romantic vibe in the trailer itself; that serenity shaped the entire process.

This is your first time playing a Bengali woman and shooting in Kolkata. How was the experience?

Fatima: Oh, I adored every bit of it! It was my first visit to Kolkata, and the warmth of the people felt like home. I was fortunate to have Bengali actors around me—true cultural representatives who carried the body language and essence I wanted to capture. Bengali women have a certain sharpness, a salty elegance, and to bring that alive, I often turned to Ananya Chatterjee for insights. Vivek also painted Kolkata in a new light—not the usual red-saturated frames, but with subtlety and softness. I discovered the city in a way I hadn’t seen before.

Since the film explores love and relationships, what’s your personal view on love, breakups, and compromise?

Fatima: Love, for me, should be free of compromise. When you truly care for someone, you give without being asked—not out of obligation, but out of joy. Once compromise enters the conversation, the love starts to wither. I love deeply, passionately—so yes, I cry after breakups. But I believe in feeling everything. You can’t taste joy without first knowing sorrow, and it’s important to let those emotions flow through you.

Could you fall in love with someone older than you?

Fatima: Why not? Love doesn’t come with age restrictions. Even my parents had such a relationship—it’s entirely natural.

There’s a strong line in the trailer: “Aap kyun decide karoge meri limit.” Do you feel this film promotes feminism?

Fatima: More than feminism, the film promotes equality. It doesn’t pit genders against each other—it simply says we’re all human and deserving of the same respect. Women don’t want to be “better” than men; we want to be treated as equals. Physically we may differ, but emotionally, we’re just as strong—sometimes even stronger. The film doesn’t carry a loud message; it quietly echoes fairness and balance.

Your characters—be it Pinky in Ludo, Laal Saree, or Madhu in this film—always strike a chord. What did you take away from Madhu?

Fatima: Madhu gave me something I hadn’t experienced before—a deep sense of belonging. I come from a small nuclear family, so this was my first time portraying a woman surrounded by a big, loving family. We shot in Kolkata, and for the first time, I felt the warmth of constantly having people around you—sharing, laughing, supporting. In Mumbai, especially as an outsider, you often shift houses, don’t know your neighbours, and lack that support. Through Madhu, I experienced the joy of familial closeness, and it left a lasting impression on me.

Madhavan is a versatile Indian actor known for his impactful performances across Tamil, Hindi, and other regional cinemas. He began his career with television before making a successful film debut with #Alaipayuthey (2000) in Tamil, directed by #ManiRatnam. He gained pan-India popularity with Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein (2001), earning him a romantic hero image. Over the years, he broke that mould by delivering powerful roles in films like Rang De Basanti, 3 Idiots, Tanu Weds Manu, and the thriller series Breathe. His transformation in Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, which he also directed, won critical acclaim and national awards. Madhavan is admired for his intelligent script choices, adaptability, and grounded persona. From romance to intense drama, he has seamlessly navigated diverse genres. With his recent success in films like Shaitaan, he is coming up with #AapJaisaKoi. Our Sr Editor Keerti Kadam interacted with him during the promotional event of the film.

The film feels understated and subtle. What challenges did you face while doing it?

R. Madhavan: It was challenging because I’ve carried a romantic image since Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein, but the definition of romance has changed. What was once considered romantic might now be seen as stalking. I had to unlearn old notions and adapt to today’s context. I was also nervous about looking too old for a romantic film and even asked the director if I should dye my hair. Luckily, he stood his ground, and the audience appreciated the authenticity.

Did any part of the film remind you of your own love story with your wife, Sarita?

Madhavan: Yes, especially the idea of complete surrender in love. In the film, my character experiences that, and it reflects in the body language. I’ve felt that same surrender in real life too.

The film touches on age-gap relationships. What’s your take on that?

Madhavan: I’ve seen it in my own family — couples with a 15–20 year age gap living happily. Love and understanding matter more than age. Earlier, society was more accepting, but now, even a 10-year gap can feel huge due to fast-changing generations like Gen Z, Gen Alpha, Gen Beta.

Raju Hirani once said you blend like water into every role. What are your thoughts on that?

Madhavan: Raju sir is a legend. I didn’t grow up wanting to be an actor — I entered the industry by accident, without any cinema conditioning. Maybe that’s why he sees my perspective as different. I view cinema through my own lens, not with reverence or fear.

Despite your popularity, you do fewer films. Why is that?

Madhavan: Surprisingly, most of my Instagram followers are men aged 18–40, not women (laughs). I became a romantic hero at 32, so I knew I had a short window before that image got repetitive. I also realised I wasn’t using my real strengths in commercial films. I took a break to reinvent myself and return with meaningful work. Now, I’m finally doing films that reflect who I truly am.

How was your experience shooting in Jamshedpur, your hometown?

Madhavan: It was nostalgic. Visiting my childhood home made me realise how small everything looked now. Though we only shot for a few days in Jamshedpur, the experience was touching. Shooting in Kolkata, especially at the Hooghly Ghat, felt spiritual. We’ve seen that location in so many films, and being there felt surreal.

You began with TV, moved to films, and now OTT—how do you see this evolution?

Madhavan: OTT is more demanding. In a series, you’re shooting scenes from different episodes on the same day, so you must track your character’s emotional journey across 8–10 hours. Unlike films, OTT relies heavily on tight scripts, strong dialogues, and pacing to make up for the lack of big-screen impact. Choosing the right platform is crucial—some stories work better as films, others as series. I’ve turned down good scripts simply because they were on the wrong medium.

Has your experience as a director influenced your choices as an actor?

Madhavan: Absolutely. Watching my own and others’ mistakes has made me more careful. Now, I pick projects that align with my sensibilities and suit the platform they’re being made for.

Your chemistry with Fatima Sana Shaikh looks great in the trailer. Did you both do workshops?

Madhavan: Yes, we did extensive readings. Fatima was very particular about the dialogues and suggested meaningful changes. Vivek (the director) made the final calls, which is important—there should be one creative captain. These workshops helped a lot, especially for scenes with on-screen family members I was meeting for the first time. That preparation gave us familiarity, which translated into believable chemistry on screen.

Your character in Aap Jaisa Koi is a loner. Do you personally relate to that loneliness? What are your insecurities as an actor?

Madhavan: Yes, I do relate. You’ve touched a nerve—I’ve been shooting in Chennai for the past three months and often feel lonely. My son is swimming, my wife is with him, my dogs are elsewhere, and I sometimes question if it’s all worth it at this stage in life. After shoot, I return to a hotel room and stay locked in till the next day. There’s a constant inner struggle: am I missing out on real life? Sometimes I think I should just stop and be with my family. I also feel lazy compared to actors like Ajay and Akshay, who are constantly working!

After your powerful performance in Shaitaan, you’re now doing a romantic film. How do you switch roles so effortlessly?

Madhavan: The credit goes entirely to the directors. After watching Shaitaan, it was Vivek who wanted to cast me in Aap Jaisa Koi. Good casting is vital, and Vivek, Kumar ji, Vikas, and even Ajay Devgn believed in me for roles like the Aghori in Shaitaan. Ajay trusted me and backed the film as producer—that gave me space to perform. I’m not a trained film expert; I rely on my directors, and Vivek is one of the best—his knowledge of cinema is encyclopedic.

With a career spanning over two decades, she has showcased her collections at prestigious platforms like Lakmé Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week. Archana is celebrated for her commitment to sustainable fashion and for empowering local artisans through her work. From Bollywood celebrities to international clients, her creations have adorned many style icons. Her design philosophy reflects elegance, innovation, and cultural richness. In this exclusive interview, we delve into her creative journey, inspirations, and vision for the future of Indian fashion.

From a modest college exhibition to dressing some of India’s biggest stars, the journey of this remarkable designer is nothing short of inspirational. In this exclusive interview, we delve into her beginnings, her foray into Bollywood, experiences with Miss World, and how she balances creativity with business acumen.

Tell us about your beginnings. How did you get into designing and what led you to this profession?

I believe the seed was planted when I was just 17 years old. I gathered four of my friends and convinced them to do something creative and fulfilling. I told them it could be one of the best things we’d ever experience. That’s how we started Juncture — a small curated collection that we showcased in a hall right next to NM College, where I was studying at the time. To our surprise, the event went really well. That was the moment I realized people were connecting with my design sensibility, and it gave me the motivation to explore this path further.

After getting married, I officially launched my own label — completely self-funded. I had no capital, just the determination to create. I made one collection, and it sold out. I used the revenue from that to produce the next one, and it’s been a step-by-step journey ever since. People often think it’s all about creativity, and while creativity is at the heart of it, I also believe that the ability to work with people, nurture relationships, and maintain consistency is just as vital. With hard work, blessings, a little luck, and support from those around me, I’ve managed to keep going — and now, nearly three decades later, I look back at this journey with immense gratitude.

Did you ever consider becoming an actress in the early years of your life?

No, acting never really appealed to me. However, my mother would always say that we have good brains and good bodies — and that we should use our brains to build something meaningful. That stayed with me.

How did your journey into Bollywood and the glamour world begin?

It happened quite organically. We had opened a store in Juhu, and slowly, people from the glamour industry began walking in. One thing led to another, and before we knew it, we were designing for actors and celebrities. Being based in Mumbai definitely helped — the proximity to Bollywood made these connections easier. Over time, we had the privilege of working with incredible names like Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut, Rakul Preet Singh, Malaika Arora, and many others.

In your opinion, who’s the best and worst dressed in Bollywood?

Honestly, I feel everyone today carries themselves with confidence and flair. Celebrities truly own their looks and bring their personality into every outfit. That’s the real differentiator — the way they embody a garment. So I wouldn’t say anyone is poorly dressed. They all have a unique sense of style and the confidence to pull it off.

Is there any actor you especially enjoyed styling?

That’s a tough one — I’ve enjoyed working with all of them. Each actor teaches you something different. They are detail-oriented and particular about fit and finish, which, in turn, sharpens your own skills. Every collaboration has contributed to my journey in some way or the other.

Do some actors take a deeper interest in the design process? Have you had to go the extra mile for any?

Yes, many actors today have a refined understanding of fashion. It’s an important part of their image, so naturally, they are more involved. I remember the first time we styled Rana Daggubati — his arms were incredibly long, probably the longest I’ve ever worked with! We weren’t even in Mumbai at the time, so coordinating the fit was a challenge. But he was a delight to work with — humble, professional, and appreciative. In general, most actors are respectful and cooperative. We’ve been in the industry long enough, and that mutual respect makes working together smoother. Of course, each actor has their quirks, and it’s our job to accommodate those gracefully.

Let’s talk about your experience with Miss World Telangana. What was that like?

It was one of the most exhilarating yet challenging experiences of my career. It was the second year of Miss World in India, and Telangana’s very first. The scale was enormous — we managed nearly 240 outfits. Just transporting them back and forth was a massive logistical effort. The design and production process involved sleepless nights, meticulous planning, and tireless dedication. Despite the exhaustion, it was deeply rewarding. Watching our creations on stage made it all worth it.

You were associated with Miss World for two consecutive years. How do you view that chapter of your journey?

Those two years were truly enriching. They taught me a lot — about discipline, leadership, and what it takes to manage high-scale events. Initially, it was a one-time engagement, but we were invited again the following year, and we accepted. We haven’t committed to any future collaborations yet, but if the timing works out, who knows? It’s always about the right opportunity at the right time.

Do you design for the general public as well? How do you manage pricing?

Absolutely! We design for everyone. A common misconception is that designer wear is always prohibitively expensive. But when you consider the hours of skilled craftsmanship — some garments take over 500 hours of embroidery and handwork — the pricing is justified. Even fast fashion retail stores are becoming costly now. Our goal is to ensure value for money. For the quality and detailing we offer, we keep our pricing fair and thoughtful. We have a wide base of clients who appreciate and support our work.

In this digital age, how has social media helped your brand?

Social media has been transformative. My daughter joined the business about five years ago and began building our digital presence and online store. Through platforms like Instagram and Facebook, we’ve managed to reach clients across the globe. It’s like having a virtual showroom open 24/7. Earlier, we couldn’t imagine having such a wide reach — but today, we connect with customers from every corner of the world.

Apart from India, which international markets are your strongest?

The USA is definitely our biggest international market. There’s a large and discerning Indian diaspora there that appreciates quality, craftsmanship, and cultural aesthetics. They value traditional artistry, and our collections resonate well with them.

Is there a celebrity or sportsperson you dream of designing for?

Not particularly. The world of fashion and entertainment keeps evolving, and there’s always fresh talent coming in. If we ever want to work with someone specific, we reach out — and usually, it happens. That’s how organic this industry is. But I do think it would be exciting to do a major fashion show in the U.S., perhaps with iconic personalities walking the ramp. That would be something unique and memorable.

Lastly, would you say your Miss World experience helped your business grow?

Without a doubt. Miss World gave us significant visibility and public relations exposure. Being associated with a global platform elevated our brand and introduced us to newer audiences. That level of reach and recognition is invaluable for any designer.

She also has been part of 11 mesmerizing music videos from renowned labels such as T-Series and Tips. Soniya Bansal spoke to CineBuster on various topics. Excerpts.

How did your glamour World journey start?
I feel blessed as an individual with an impressive height that propelled me into the world of modeling—a pivotal first step in my journey within the entertainment industry. From that moment onward, my path has been paved with success and there has been no turning back.

I have always held the belief that looking good and presenting oneself in a poised and elegant manner are essential aspects of good manners. As a part of the glamorous world, it is a mandate that I wholeheartedly embrace. With every stride on the runway and every photoshoot, I aim to embody the epitome of beauty and grace.

Modeling has not only been a career choice for me; it has been a passion that ignites my soul. The art of creating mesmerizing visuals and telling stories through captivating images has become second nature to me. It is a world where I thrive, constantly pushing the boundaries of creativity and self-expression.

While modeling has been my foundation, I have also delved into various other facets of the entertainment industry, exploring acting and music videos. Each venture has allowed me to showcase my versatility and extend my horizons, proving that my talents go beyond the runway.

With unwavering dedication and a hunger for success, I am committed to leaving an indelible mark in the world of fashion and entertainment. I continue to evolve as an artist, embracing new challenges and immersing myself in projects that push me beyond my limits.

Join me on this exhilarating journey as I bring forth a captivating fusion of beauty, talent, and ambition. Together, let us witness the transformative power of passion and embrace the endless possibilities that lie ahead.

Are you passionate about acting? What keeps you motivated?
My deep passion for storytelling and the transformative power of the performing arts. Every time I step into a character’s shoes, I am driven by the opportunity to evoke emotions, inspire empathy, and touch the hearts of audiences. The ability to transport people to different worlds, to make them laugh, cry, or reflect, is a truly rewarding experience.
Additionally, the collaborative nature of the industry fuels my motivation. Working alongside talented actors, directors, and crew members creates a supportive and dynamic environment that constantly pushes me to elevate my craft.

Moreover, the continuous growth and learning that come with acting keep me motivated. Each role presents a unique set of challenges and allows me to explore different facets of human nature. It is an ongoing process of self-discovery and honing my acting skills.
Lastly, the unwavering support of my loved ones and the appreciation and connection I receive from audiences are tremendous sources of motivation. Knowing that my work can positively impact others’ lives is incredibly fulfilling and reinforces my dedication to the craft.

Despite the laborious nature of acting, the sheer joy of creating art, the thrill of embodying diverse characters, and the ability to make a difference through storytelling keep me motivated and inspired to continue pursuing my passion with unwavering enthusiasm.

Any advice for the new entrants in this field?
To all the aspiring actors out there, I would like to share some valuable advice that has guided me on my own journey: Embrace your uniqueness: Celebrate your individuality and recognise that your unique qualities and perspectives are your strengths. Embrace what sets you apart from others, as it will bring authenticity and depth to your performances.

Hone your craft: Acting is an art form that requires continuous learning and development. Invest in your skills by attending acting classes, workshops, and seeking opportunities to perform. Explore different acting techniques and styles to broaden your range and versatility.

Be persistent and resilient: Acting is a competitive industry, and facing rejections is inevitable. Cultivate resilience and perseverance, knowing that every “no” brings you closer to a “yes.”

Network and collaborate: Build connections within the industry by attending events, joining acting communities, and networking with fellow professionals.

Stay true to yourself: In a world that may try to mold you into a certain type or stereotype, stay true to your authentic self.

Be open to continuous growth: Acting is a lifelong journey of self-discovery and growth. Remain open to learning, evolving, and challenging yourself.

Stay dedicated and disciplined: Acting requires dedication, discipline, and hard work. Treat it as a profession, committing yourself to continuous improvement and investing the time and effort required.

Enjoy the journey: Acting is a beautiful and transformative art form. Embrace the joy and passion that comes with it. Find fulfillment in the process, the connections you make, and the impact you create through your performances. Remember to have fun and enjoy the journey along the way.

Embrace these pieces of advice with an open mind and a resilient spirit. Stay committed to your dreams, work hard, and believe in yourself. With dedication, perseverance, and a love for the craft, you can navigate the exciting path of becoming a successful actor.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
I aspire to be recognized as one of the leading actresses in the country. With each project I undertake, I am dedicated to honing my craft, delivering powerful performances, and leaving a lasting impression on audiences.

This is a tricky profession. How do you evaluate it?
What truly drives me in my pursuit of acting and producing is the boundless creativity and the constant pursuit of new experiences. The ability to immerse myself in diverse characters, tell captivating stories, and explore uncharted territories ignites a fire within me.

What’s your idea of a Perfect Woman?
I firmly believe that women are inherently perfect in their own unique and diverse forms. In my perspective, the notion of a “perfect woman” is non-existent and should not be imposed upon anyone.

What do we expect next from you?
I have always believed in the excitement of unveiling my projects at the time of their release, but I’m happy to share a glimpse of my upcoming ventures here as well.
Firstly, I am thrilled to announce my debut in the Telugu film industry with the highly anticipated action thriller, “Dheera.” This project has been an incredible opportunity for me to showcase my talent and immerse myself in the vibrant world of Telugu cinema.
In addition to “Dheera,” I am also eagerly working on my second upcoming project, “Yes Boss,” which is a captivating Hindi film. It offers a fresh and engaging storyline that I am certain will resonate with audiences and leave a lasting impression.

Apart from these exciting film projects, I am equally excited about the music videos that are in the pipeline. These projects allow me to explore the art of storytelling through the fusion of visuals and music, creating captivating narratives that captivate the senses.

I feel truly blessed and grateful for the opportunities that have come my way. Each project represents a milestone in my career, and I am committed to delivering my best with each endeavor. With the grace of God and the support of my well-wishers, I am confident that I am making strides in the right direction, pursuing credible and meaningful work that will resonate with audiences.

Your motto in life….?
Just be yourself.

The post “In my perspective, the notion of a ‘perfect woman’ is non-existent”, expresses Soniya Bansal! first appeared on Latest News, Breaking News, National News, World News, India News, Bollywood News, Business News, Politics News, Sports News, Entertainment News - CineBuster.

After being crowned #MissWorldin2000, #PriyankaChopra entered the entertainment world. Having debuted with a Tamil film, ‘#Thamizhan’, she entered #Bollywood with ‘#TheHeroLoveStoryOfASpy’ which had #SunnyDeol and #PreityZinta playing lead roles. Then came ‘#Andaaz’ and ‘#MujhseShaadiKarogi’ where she played a leading lady and both were superhit movies. Her grey shade role in ‘#Aitraaz’, starring #AkshayKumar and #KareenaKapoor, won her accolades but she already had decided to not to do vampish characters. Priyanka had established herself well in the film industry and was getting parts in major production houses’ big films. Later she co-starred with #HrithikRoshan in ‘#Krrish’ and #ShahrukhKhan in ‘#Don’. ‘#Fashion’ fetched her a #NationalFilmAward and also a Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Her repertoire includes successful films like #Kaminey, #7KhoonMaaf, #MaryKom, #BajiraoMastani among others.

Priyanka Chopra is a go getter and always excels in whatever she does. She is a perfectionist and an entrepreneur too. Priyanka floated her own production house, Purple Pebble Pictures, along with her mother Dr Madhu Chopra, and has been producing films across Indian languages. Her first film as a producer, Ventilator, won three National Awards, viz, Best Direction, Best Editing and Best Audiography. Winner of two National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards, Priyanka definitely is an achiever and her name has featured in the list of 100 Most Influential People in the World, 100 Most Powerful Women and BBC 100 Women.

Recently Priyanka made a statement in media that some forces in the Bollywood were working against her and she took a decision to move to the west. Initially she focused on singing and released three singles. But the actor in her was not letting her be away from the cameras. Priyanka did a web series Quantico in Hollywood and had made up her mind to stay back in Hollywood. Later she was part of Baywatch, Isn’t It Romantic, The Matrix Resurrections etc. Priyanka found a life partner in American singer-songwriter Nick Jonas and they got married in 2018. They have a daughter named Malti Marie Chopra Jonas. Now in Citadel Priyanka is headlining the show wherein she plays a spy alongside Richard Madden. Our Sr Editor Keerti Kadam interacted with Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Excerpts…

Conversations are happening about diversity and more prominent representations of Indians and South Asians in Hollywood. Do you think the scope for us Indians to headline a project in Hollywood, be it a film or a web show has gotten better? Did it require for you to audition for Citadel?
I didn’t audition for Citadel. I had to audition for my first one Quantico, and I feel auditioning is not a bad thing. Auditioning is normal, in fact, we should do a lot more of it because then people are cast because of merit. They are not cast because they are a flavour of the season or someone likes you, or for that matter someone recommended you. But I do think when we talk about representation in Hollywood, English language entertainment especially, why not? We are one fifth of the world’s population, just Indians! English language entertainment travels all around the world. Why don’t we see more of us as leads? We come from one of the largest film industries in the world. We produce more than a 1000 movies per annum in India, every year. Our technicians are world class. Our technicians are hired by Hollywood to do a lot of their work. Why? Because they are good at their jobs. But yet we are sidelined. So I am sorry but an actor like me who has enjoyed being a leading lady in Bollywood, I know my job will not be sidelined. When I audition I will be good because I am a good actor. I will get the job like I did for Quantico and I am not under confident so we need to create more opportunities and I know as someone who has gone from India to abroad. I myself as a producer am doing that, I have a first look deal with Amazon Prime.

I am developing multiple shows with them which not only star Indian faces but also have Indian faces behind the camera, women behind the camera, writers, directors. My dream is to be able to influx Hollywood with brown faces because I know how talented we are and how much we deserve to be on the world stage. So it wasn’t easy as it has taken world’s 10 years to be able to be the face of a poster and have equal opportunity with my male co-actor. It will take time but I am not scared of it. I am very hopeful that in the next 5 years you will see a very changing landscape because of lot of my colleagues and our demands of making sure we see a lot more of faces that look like ours.

The action that you have done is fantastic in fact Russo Brothers said that it’s on par with James Bond movies. What are your views on that?
I have come from a background of doing action films. I have done action movies in Bollywood as well, so I have a lot of confidence in myself when I am going to do it with my amazing stunt team. The stunt team for Citadel comes from the Russo Brothers. They have done movies like Avengers, James Bond movies, they have worked with the best in business so I have learnt a lot from them. I am not arrogant. I love to learn and especially when someone is more experienced than I am, then I try to learn more from them. So I had a very good experience of working with the stunt team. They taught me a lot. Almost 80% of the action I did myself because I trust my body and my instincts, but I have learnt a lot of things. You know the action that I have done in this show is definitely very different than anything else I have done before.

You said a very important thing about representation and how this is one of the biggest shows in the world, headlined by a brown woman from South Asia. What do you think this means going ahead, not just for you but for the leading ladies from South Asia who have struggled like you? Where do you think this goes? How Important is Citadel in mainstreaming representation in Hollywood and what does it mean for your career as well as going forward?
I wouldn’t like to say Citadel just by itself, if it does well it’s going to change the game for the actresses who come from South Asia. That doesn’t work, it’s fine. But seeing someone say like me for the first time in Quantico, everyone was so excited to see it. Why? Because we’ve never seen it. That opened the doors for Hollywood and International entertainment. Everyone was like, Oh! This can happen. You know we should look at more talent from India, not just females though. Before me, Mindy Kaling or Aziz Ansari or people of Indian descent have created their own shows. They both had to create their own shows to play leads, because no one else was offering it. Think about how lesser opportunities were then. We had Aishwarya Rai who did some amazing movies, we have Deepika Padukone doing amazing work, we have seen Irrfan who has done good work. So one thing can not lead to change, but it’s the collective of us continuously bonding together, standing together and saying,”You know that I have gotten this opportunity, now it’s my responsibility to create opportunity for someone else, turn around and move somebody else forward”. Atleast that’s what I am doing because it gives me so much joy to do things that was not done for me. I recently had this South Asian pre-Oscars party that I did last year and then this year and I am going to do it next year again and every year I am going to make it bigger and include more and more South Asian people because I want to show the power of the collective, the power of all of us.

When you sit in Hollywood you see and say, Oh wait I know this one actor, then there is Sarita Choudhary who has worked for a long time, you name a few actors and filmmakers, but when you see all of us in a room together and you see 400+ South Asian talent in the room together dressed in Indian finery at Paramount Studios, are you kidding me? That’s Powerful! That’s what I mean it takes demand to create change so I don’t know if Citadel will be the catalyst to create that change but I know Citadel will be one of the many other things or a few other things that will lead to the change. Hopefully the next generation of Indian actors will not have to think about these problems. They can just audition, win a role without having to worry about it. That’s my dream.

Your debut movie was in Tamil and we saw that a regional language movie like RRR made it to the Oscars. Now that you are a global actor, would you like to act in a regional language movie?
I would love to! I actually have a tremendous admiration for regional cinema. When I spoke to Rajamouli sir, I expressed how incredible it was that he created such a beautiful, original world for people across the globe to enjoy. I think the Tamil Industry gave me my start and I think that I have a lot of friends in Telugu, Malayalam and Tamil industry. If I get an opportunity to do something which is really amazing, path breaking, of course I will! I’ll need a little help with the language because I don’t understand any other language besides Hindi and English, but I can pretend very well. (Laugh) Like in Citadel, I speak 5 languages, I don’t really know, but I can act like I do. So hopefully just like I did with my first Tamil movie, I memorised my lines and I delivered it. I would love to get an opportunity to work in any kind of Cinema. I think language is of no barrier to me. I am an actor, I can learn how to do things and I would love the opportunity.

Were you skeptical about doing stunts as there’s someone back home waiting for you?
So just for clarity, I am not an irresponsible person when it comes to doing stunts and I never have been. I don’t do stunts because I think I am the best person in the room to do it. There are experts, we have stunt doubles, we have stunt team and when anything is really really hard, I leave it to the experts because it’s their job. I am just an actor. You should leave it to the stunts team because that’s what they actually do, day and night, it’s their department. So when something is super dangerous, I have never been someone who has been unrealistic about you know, just for the thrill I will do it. I don’t need such thrills. I don’t want to put the poor producers in quandary by stopping the shoot of the movie because if the actor gets hurt producer is the most affected person. When I was a kid, I used to be interested in such things. When I was younger and did movies, I have hung outside helicopters without a rake but as you grow older you kind of realise how silly that was and you should leave that department to the experts. So I do that. As for the challenges in doing stunts, I think the challenge is to make it look convincing, basically how to portray it convincingly.

There was a time when actresses like Hema Malini, Madhuri Dixit were considered as role models and nowadays every actress wants to become Priyanka Chopra. What is your take on it?
I grew up wanting to be Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi. They were my idols. Rekha ma’am, another one of my idols. But I think each generation evolves. It’s natural and I am sure their idols must have been the actresses before them. When the new generation steps in, the old generation takes a step back. I still admire these ladies and they were superstars at such a time where women were not given such big opportunities. We are doing it now because, us girls collectively state that we don’t want side roles, we want the main role and if you are not going to cast us, we will make our own films. But back in the time, when Sridevi, Madhuri dixit and Rekha ji were superstars they had to struggle so much. But because they had to struggle so much, they paved the way for today’s generation and hopefully now that we are demanding things, the next generation won’t have to face the problem that we are facing today. They will definitely have their own problems at that time but not the problems that this generation is facing today, because we will solve it for them.

After Malti came into your life, your priority might have changed. Did it have an effect on your assignments and how?
My work hours have reduced, they have changed. If I get a break, I go back home. I don’t work everyday like for example during the weekends, I don’t work. I enjoy spending time at home. My priorities have changed. I have slowed down things. I took a year off, after completing Citadel and of course for Malti as well to spend more time with her, to take care of her and bond with each other as a family. She is at such a healthy age where we can travel to different places together. We travelled to India, where Malti was sitting at my mom’s house eating cottage cheese with both her tiny hands. But yes priorities change, and I have seen myself controlling my stuff accordingly. My work is not my whole life. Actually things changed even before Malti came. For the past 4-5 years, the speed at which I used to RUN has now decreased, because when you get a solid ground you don’t have to run here and there. I am glad that I have a strong foundation now.

You have accomplished so much and are headlining a show like Citadel. What is that one personal and professional goal that you are yet to achieve?
A professional goal that I want to achieve is that, I want to be able to create a filmography that has the variety that I had when I was working in Bollywood. Every film that I did in Bollywood, I played a different kind of character, I did many different genres of work. I haven’t done that in Hollywood, yet. I have just about started my journey and I am hoping in the next decade or so, I can have a rainbow of various roles, challenging roles, work with the best filmmakers in Hollywood and in Bollywood, to be able to do amazing movies with the best of the best in both the industries. Very few actors, even if you think internationally have that opportunity to be able to ride between two countries like Sophia Loren, Salma Hayek, Me, Aishwarya Rai, Deepika Padukone and now hopefully Alia Bhatt. There are very few that navigate being relevant in more than one industry, so it’s a very unique opportunity and I will never want to lose it. I think that’s one goal that I want to achieve professionally. Personally, I think I am very content with my goals. I am in a very content place in my life right now. God has really blessed me. My father’s blessings are with me. My family is healthy and happy, we live in harmony, what else do you want? So when it comes to personal goals I am good.

What is the secret of your success?
There are a few, I don’t think there’s only one thing that makes someone successful. I believe in perseverance and that nothing can speak more than hard work. A lot of people don’t get opportunities. Recognising opportunities is very important. When there is a door that cracks open, and you just think that it’s only open for the light to come in, then it’s a missed opportunity. But if the door cracks open and you have the perseverance and curiosity to open it a little bit more you may get lucky. We females can have an incredible family life and an incredible career. I have seen my grandmother and mother do it, I have seen many women in my family do it. But women need opportunities and I think recognising an opportunity is not just for women but for young people is crucial instead of waiting for the opportunities. No one will spoon-feed it to you. It’s not going to come in your hand and will say, “Hey, I want to cast you in my movie!” This only happens in reel life, not in real life. In real life you have to persevere, you have to work hard, you have to hustle and you will bear the fruit.

With Citadel you recently revealed that you got equal pay for the first time in 22 years. Do you think insecurity of the other gender exists in 2023?
Definitely! I am sorry to the men in the room but I have some incredible men in my life who are not insecure of my success, but I have also met men who were very insecure of my success. I think that men have enjoyed the freedom and the pride of being the breadwinners, the leaders of the family that it’s threatening to their territory, when a woman is more successful. When a man is staying at home and woman goes to work, he will feel bad, but we have to teach our sons that, ‘There is no shame in crying! There’s no shame in tears! There’s no shame in being able to share with your sister, your mother or your girlfriend the opportunities or the spotlight!’ It’s an amazing thing. My dad did that to my mother. When my mother was getting into private practice and he was still into military, my mom started earning more than my father but they saw it as a unit, because money was coming in the same house. So he did not have that ego and that’s what I saw in my house. So now today when I am walking on a red carpet with my husband, he steps aside and gives me the center stage, I feel very proud that I have surrounded myself with my father, my husband, my in-laws, my friends with people who don’t have that insecurity. So we as a race, as a society need to raise those kind of men that don’t feel insecure about these things. There are so many things to be insecure about, why are you comparing these things? Let everyone be successful! In the end it’s going to come in your house itself.

The post Priyanka Chopra Jonas : Global Star! first appeared on Latest News, Breaking News, National News, World News, India News, Bollywood News, Business News, Politics News, Sports News, Entertainment News - CineBuster.

A Delhiite #SanyaMalhotra is a trained dancer who specialises in contemporary and ballet forms. After being a part of top 100 of #DanceIndiaDance, Sanya moved to Mumbai for greener pastures. She is thankful that she did not advance in DID as then she would not have pursued acting. Casting director #MukeshChhabra recommended her along with #FatimaSanaShaikh to play Phogat sisters, #AamirKhan’s daughters in ‘#Dangal’. After strenuous five rounds of auditions, physical training and workshops Sanya landed the role of #BabitaKumari (Phogat) in #NiteshTiwari directorial Dangal which became the highest grossing Indian film ever with earnings of more than Rs 2,000 crores.

Sanya Malhotra then started featuring in different genre films like Badhai Ho with Ayushmann Khurrana, which again was a break away film from the mainstream cinema. It was critically acclaimed and did well at box office too giving fresh lease of life to veteran actors Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao. Sanya then did an offbeat film ‘Photograph’ starring Nawazuddin Siddique and ‘Pataakha’ alongside newcomer Radhika Madan. In the meanwhile she choreographed Aamir Khan for a song ‘Sexy Baliye’ from ‘Secret Superstar’. During the pandemic her films Shakuntala Devi, starring Vidya Balan and an anthology ‘Ludo’, took the OTT path as the theatres were closed down during the lockdown. She had digital releases like ‘Pagglait’, ‘Meenakshi Sundareshwar’, ‘Love Hostel’ some time back. Now Sanya Malhotra is donning an uniform and will be seen playing a lead in a comedy-drama ‘Kathal : A Jackfruit Mystery’. Sanya Malhotra interacted with our Sr Editor Keerti Kadam and spoke at length on many topics.

You are doing a film with an unusual name, Kathal. Throw some light on it.
So, Kathal is a Hindi name for Jackfruit. The story of this film revolves around Jackfruits. The title creates curiosity and the central theme is around Jackfruit. Right after ‘Pagglait’, Guneet (Monga) (Guneet Monga, this year, bagged an Academy Award for a documentary short film, ‘The Elephant Whisperers’) called me and told me that she has a one-liner for a film which she would like to share with me. We got on a Zoom call and she gave me the one-liner, and I fell in love with it.

Association with Guneet after ‘Pagglait’ has been very special. Also I share a special bond with Ekta (Kapoor) ma’am. ‘Kathal’ is an unique subject. This is based on true events. Frankly I did not believe that ‘Kathal chori ho gaye hai’ and things happening. But I was told that this incident has actually happened. Frankly some unbelievable stories are available in our country. I met the director, Yashowardhan Mishra, who narrated the story to me and I wanted to be part of this project. It’s been written beautifully by Yasho and his father Ashok Mishra.

A lot of your films saw OTT release. Do you think OTT gave wings to your career?
I think yes, definitely. I saw major change in my career and the way I am perceived by the audience and to the industry people. This change happened post ‘Pagglait’. Then came ‘Meenakshi Sundareshwar’, ‘Love Hostel’, ‘Ludo’. I have seen that change and give the credit to OTT. It’s been a good journey so far. I feel quite blessed. My conditioning as an actor started with Dangal where I had put in a lot of hard work.

You are playing a cop for the first time. Can you share something?
‘Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery’ helped me learn that a woman cop doesn’t have to be “masculine” to do her job. whenever women go, they bring so much empathy in whatever they are doing. That was so special to see. Even if I’m playing a woman cop, I don’t have to be masculine. I have spent days in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, following female police officers in order to understand my character Mahima, better. Female cops’ life is quite challenging. We visited police stations and jails.

What was the reaction of criminals in jails?
(Smiles) All of them were gazing at me. They never thought that Sanya Malhotra will visit them. A lot of them were staring at me but nothing untoward things happened.

Is this your first attempt at comedy?
Yes. I am doing comedy for the first time. For me, it was a master class in acting as it was very difficult for me to catch the dialect. Moreover, I had never done a female-led comedy previously and there I was in front of such senior actors. So, I made sure that I was well-prepared before I went in front of the camera. I had done scripts in Haryanvi and for the movie ‘Pataakha’ there was a different dialect used. So I was confident that I will be able to catch this dialect properly, but on the first day of the shoot, I realised that it was not sounding the way I wanted my character to sound. But, Neha Saraf was there, who is from MP, and she speaks that dialect beautifully. So she used to talk to me in that manner and gradually, I got used to it. But female led comedies are fewer.

Our movie has Anant Joshi, Vijay Raaz, Rajpal Yadav, Govind Pandey, Neha Saraf. They are all stalwarts. I could not take any chances because they are such fabulous actors and do a lot of impromptu things. So I had to be on my toes all the time. I used to do homework before reaching sets. With these indomitable actors around me, my responsibility was to give more than 100%. I think we have a dream team here.

You just mentioned Rajpal Yadav. How was it working with him?
I am such a big fan of his craft. I wondered how can I let people know that I have done a script reading session with Rajpal Yadav over a Zoom call, and also that I am doing a comedy film with him. So, I kept my phone at the side and recorded some snippets to show my parents that I have done a script reading with Rajpal Yadav.

He does his brand of comedy and one gets engrossed watching him perform. It was an honour that I got to share screen with him. He is so natural and a fabulous human being, always ready to help. I had a gala time performing with him.

Earlier people didn’t have faith in females playing a cop but now the times have changed. Do you think so?
Yes, of course. A lot of female cops are seen on screen in the recent times. I think the credit goes to the writers, to be honest. There is a shift now how women are portrayed on screen. I am really glad that I’m part of this shift and this change. As an actor I’m making the most of it. We used to objectify women a lot earlier and now we can see the changes and I’m happy to be part of this industry.

Sanya, you are a fabulous dancer. Won’t you want to do a dance oriented film?
Of course, I would love to. I’m waiting for the right opportunity and the right script. I am hoping to dance in front of the camera. I hope it happens soon.

You were a celebrity guest at Speak For India. How was the experience?
It was an amazing experience. It’s a good platform offered to the youth of this country. I saw these youngsters debating fearlessly. All of them were younger to me and I learnt a lot from them. Today’s youth is well aware of what’s happening around the world, including India. They have a strong logic and I felt inspired.

What are your forthcoming projects?
I am doing ‘Mrs’ which will release soon. Then I am playing Vicky’s (Kaushal) wife in ‘Sam Manekshaw’, directed by Meghna Gulzar. And I am playing an important role in ‘Jawan’, directed by Atlee which have Shahrukh Khan, Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi.

The post Sanya Malhotra : Female led Comedies are Fewer! first appeared on Latest News, Breaking News, National News, World News, India News, Bollywood News, Business News, Politics News, Sports News, Entertainment News - CineBuster.

Sharad Kelkar has a been part of the entertainment industry since 2004 and has been doing notable work too on small as well as big screen. But Sharad received immense popularity when #Bahubali was released in 2017. Bahubali was the biggest hit in Hindi too in the longest time in the history of Bollywood. Primarily it was made in Telugu by #SSRajamouli which starred #Prabhas. Even Prabhas, who was a superstar down South, became a Pan India star and got immense popularity throughout India. Also alongside Prabhas, #SharadKelkar too became a household name overnight because of Prabhas and his role in Bahubali. So how Sharad Kelkar gained so much popularity? He was the Hindi voice of Prabhas. His voice gave him instant pan-India popularity. In fact he made Bahubali famous across nation. Sharad Kelkar voice overs majority of #Hollywood films and is a noted actor in #Hindi, #Marathi, #Telugu & #Tamil films.

Sharad Kelkar is a product of television and debuted on #Doordarshan with #Aakrosh. Good looks and good physique and in addition to a wonderful voice landed him multiple roles on small screen. He met his beautiful wife Keerti Gaikwad, an actress too, during acting in one of the serials and both fell in love and got married in 2005. In 2006 they both participated in a dance reality show ‘Nach Baliye’. Sharad was always a sought after actor on television but he was keen on featuring on big screen. He has been part of many noted Marathi and Hindi films. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Gooliyon Ki Raasleela Ram Leela’ brought him in the limelight because the film was a superhit. His grey shade role was well received by the audiences. Then came a Marathi film Lai Bhaari, which was Riteish Deshmukh’s Marathi debut film, wherein he played an antagonist and won accolades for his portrayal. Sharad has been part of many films including Hero, Mohenjo Daro, Rocky Handsome, Irada, Bhoomi, Rakshas, Youngraad, Madhuri, Housefull 4, Bhuj etc to name a few.

Sharad Kelkar played Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Ajay Devgn starrer “Tanhaji” which was hailed by everyone. Interestingly enough Sharad played Shivaji Maharaj’s trusted soldier Baji Prabhu Deshpande in Har Har Mahadev, which too was lauded by everyone. Then his transgender avatar in Laxmii, starring Akshay Kumar, was talk of the town as he played it with utmost authenticity. His recent releases has been Code Name Tiranga, Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga, Chatrapathi. Our Sr Editor Keerti Kadam interacted with Sharad Kelkar and discussed many topics.

These days quite a few films are released on OTT. Your ‘Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga’ too was released digitally. What is your opinion?
These days makers are bringing interesting stories. OTT is a place where film makers can express themselves the way they want to. Also they can make movies without having the box office pressure. Of course, you ought to make a good movie. My Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga was released directly on OTT because it was a commissioned film. It was made for the OTT platform by Netflix. The interesting part is that this movie was declared a big hit and I am happy that OTT releases too are taken seriously by the audiences and the film industry people. CNKB has an interesting plot and where a common viewer’s guess ends, the writer and directors’ verity starts.

The plot is not run of the mill. It has been written well and Amar Kaushik has directed it beautifully. The screenplay is pristine. When I got a narration I was imagining what will happen next. But everything happening later was beyond my imagination. As a character also I was trying to find out who he was or what was he doing in that chaos. I played an interesting character in CNKB and on the whole the film has thrills, chills and entertains heavily. And it’s not a plain thriller, it has heist, it has hijack, so the plot gets interesting as the minutes go by. The sequences in the plane look authentic and the viewers got the realistic feeling. For any actor or a viewer who’s a thriller lover it’s a very intriguing film.

You have been part of different genres. Do you do it consciously?
I’ll say, I am lucky that I get the opportunity to play diversifying characters. I am thankful to my producers and directors for taking risks in investing in me. About changing genres, I have been doing it for the last 18 years. I feel that if I’ll not be able to surprise myself then how will I surprise my audience? The viewers must get surprised with my work. So in a way consciously I try to do different stuff and am fortunate enough for getting that opportunity.

How do you lock your scripts? What’s your preparation process?
Whenever a film is offered to me and if my heart says yes, then I do it. See, it’s important to convince yourself about the character you are playing. If you do not relate to it or don’t believe in it, then there’s no point in playing it. I take my parts seriously and try to project the character in the film. After all these years, one gets an idea about the scripts during the narration.

First and foremost the script is important. Secondly I see what my character is doing in the script, whether it is helping narration move forward etc. Next is the director. I interact with the director to understand about the nuances of the character. Then I think of what I can bring to the table to make this character more interesting. If the director seems rigid, not giving freedom to the actors to develop their characters, then it’s a risky proposition. The producer and the banner also play an important part in decision making. And last but not the least, the pay check. Money too is an important aspect of signing a film.

How much important the director is for you?
He is very important. Off late sometimes I go wrong with my judgement. But I go with my gut feeling about a person. 99% of the times I’ve been right. 1 or 2 cases were unpleasant but that’s fine. Director is the person who has the complete vision in his mind. We actors do our roles but with discussion an actor can bring novelty to the character.

How do you deal with success and failure?
When a particular film doesn’t do well, I do feel bad about it. But I am a very honest guy, I realise what is the problem in the film and you get to know that in this particular way maybe the film is not good or didn’t pan out the way we thought it will. I don’t get into problems nor blame it on anyone by saying he or she is responsible. No worries, it wasn’t the time so the film didn’t do well. Every film is born with it’s fate. I accept it and move on.

On switching roles do you fear whether you’ll get appreciated or not? How do you differentiate the choices of your films?
I don’t fear that. My only fear is, will I like and accept myself in that role? That matters to me. Conviction is very very important for me. I do two different films in one passing day. One positive character and another negative. If I start thinking ‘Mujhe Sab Kuch Aata Hai’ then I won’t be able to work further and that will stunt my progress.

Acting remains the same at the end of the day whether it’s for theatrical release or on OTT. I’ll do to the best to my capacity. I can never say that, if the film is for theatre, then i’ll act this way or if it’s OTT then in a different way. Acting is acting, whatever the medium be. For me each project is important and I do it with utmost sincerity.

After playing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj what difference did you find in your career graph or people approaching you?
It has changed a lot. I run away from typecasting as I said earlier because I was not getting any opportunity before Tanhaji. Then again, if you don’t get opportunities how will you showcase your talent? Or for that matter what capacity you have in terms of acting? So, after I played Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Tanhaji, things have changed positively. Now makers call me for different kind of roles and that’s what any actor wants to be called, a versatile actor.

You have a rich baritone voice. Has your voice become hindrance for your characters?
Yes, it has. Absolutely it was a hindrance in certain cases. Sometimes it’s an advantage sometimes it’s a disadvantage for certain characters. In few characters I try to portray in a very simpler manner but because of maybe my structure or voice it looks very powerful. Then I change it accordingly or if I have to do a certain kind of role, I’m very careful of how to use my voice. Frankly most of the time my voice has been advantageous.

There is a comparison between your voice and Amit Ji’s voice…..
(Laughs) They are not comparing his voice, his voice is much much better. Big B’s voice is way superior. There is no comparison. But yes, people are not comparing, they are liking my voice equally to Mr. Bachchan. I read that or heard somewhere on youtube that after Mr. Bachchan’s voice there is one voice they spoke about is, my voice. Again I can’t understand my voice as I’m hearing it everyday 24/7.

Are you working on your voice?
Lol. I do not do anything. It’s natural and I let it remain natural. I eat everything. Khatta, Mitha sab kuch khata hun. So the answer is No. I do not do anything for my voice. But yes, I am asked and forced to work on my physique. I am the most lazy human on this planet earth. I just want to eat and sleep.

You wanted to be in army? How much engrossed are you into fitness?
I wished to go to the Armed Forces but due to me being super lethargic it didn’t happen. Then my attitude became let’s just sit back and chill in life, why to go there. I was a gym instructor. I have spent so much time in Gyms that now I do not even want to look at a Gym, forget working out there. But nowadays I try and go to the gym. I’m little cautious about my sleep and food intake though. Now, food is better but sleep is little deprived. I have been doing back to back projects and that’s why I am sleep deprived.

What is your preparation point while playing a historical character?
Historical characters are difficult to play. You cannot err there because so much information is available in the public domain. One needs to be sensitive and disciplined while playing any historical character. You can’t take it lightly because there is a lot of responsibility on your shoulders. To be serious about the character which you’re playing and preparing for, you need to look like the character, sound like him, give the best portrayal which you want to see.

Yami Gautam was a face of a leading fairness cream brand and did a lot of modelling in initial years. Though she was keen on becoming an IAS officer, she ended up doing television shows like #ChandKePaarChalo, #YehPyaarNaHogaKam etc. Later in 2012 Yami was selected to play lead opposite #AyushmannKhurrana in #VickyDonor, which fetched her #ZeeCineAward for #BestFemaleDebut. Incidentally the film was produced by #JohnAbraham. Her role in it was hugely appreciated and Yami started getting good offers. Yami did #Badlapur, headlined by #VarunDhawan and directed by #SriramRaghavan. Her joy was touching the sky when she was cast opposite #HrithikRoshan in #Kaabil. Hrithik and Yami’s performances were well received. #VickyKaushal starrer and #AdityaDhar directorial #UriTheSurgicalStrike was a huge hit and despite limited screen space her performance was noticed and appreciated. In #Bala too her comic timing won her accolades. The film Uri: The Surgical Strike is extremely important for Yami because a couple of years back, in the pandemic era, she got married to it’s director Aditya Dhar.

#YamiGautamDhar has been progressing professionally and in recent times quite a few of her films were released on OTT and were declared hits. A Thursday, Lost, Dasvi, which had Abhishek Bachchan and Nimrat Kaur with her, were released digitally and were well appreciated. Her last OTT release was Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga. It was declared a superhit and to celebrate the success Yami met a select few journos for a tete-a-tete. Our Sr Editor Keerti Kadam interacted with Yami Gautam Dhar and she was game for every question. Excerpts…

You have been ruling OTT now. In fact you are the new OTT Queen. Do you find any difference between a theatrical release an OTT release?
I had my share of some good theatrical releases also, starting my first film Vicky Donor. I remember Badlapur, Kaabil, Uri even Bala they were runaway hits. Theatrical release has it’s own perks, so I don’t think any other medium will give that kind of cinematic experience that a theatre gives, which is how I feel films are designed to be watched. It’s a dark hall. The director takes you to his own world, his vision and you forget about everything. I still remember back in the 90’s, the smell of fresh popcorn, fresh samosas, pastries laid out for that exact amount of people who came to watch the film at that time. So watching a film on a big curtain gave a totally different vibe. But there is a pre-pandemic and a post pandemic era and I am sure every actor must be saying the same thing and it’s actually very true. We adapt with time. You have to go with the flow and who thought that a platform named OTT will emerge and takeover, suddenly change the demography of experiencing cinema and the time where it was very important especially for producers and a lot of people in terms of finance, even to the audience to entertain themselves.

You see, whatever the medium, my acting won’t change, my performance, my sincerity will remain intact when it comes to films or OTT films. I will never discriminate and think that oh wait this film is made for OTT and this film is made for theatre, I will never do that and will never like to hear it from my director as well. Our job is to give you the best film according to our sensibility and our vision, budgets and everything possible. Where it lands up is the producers prerogative, because it’s their money. They want to feel safe especially for a mid-budget film. A big budget film is still very different but for mid budget films, right now to have that courage, the confidence more than the courage and to expect that yes I think I can recover it or how much I will recover? The math for a mid-budget film is very different. Although you never know, for example URI, that was a miracle and a huge surprise. It’s difficult in today’s times though but I see it as a period of correction, as a period to push the right people who are the writers, creative people and the directors to push themselves and to take it as a challenge that if you are making a good film or a show, the audience should not skip it, they should be engaged in it, be it an OTT or a film in a theatre. They don’t skip that film.

Your last release ‘Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga’ was a thriller with various ingredients like romance, action, suspense etc. Share your views on that.
We had a gala time shooting ‘Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga’. The story was full of twists and turns. Every film comes with it’s own set of challenges and that’s the thrill part of it. We long for these, we seek these challenges. When you read a script, is it exciting for me as an actor and is it exciting for me as an audience? Would I watch this film? So that’s what is always running in my mind, when I am reading something, and I thought Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga was also one of those films. When I look back at the palate of films I have done especially in the recent past, it’s very different. It was your popcorn-popping entertaining and engaging thriller film. I must enjoy a film, even the one I am in. The day I don’t get to enjoy my film is the day, I myself will say that I’m sorry it didn’t work for me. Maybe it works for the audience. It has happened with some past films of mine, but I really enjoyed.

Will you name the films which didn’t work for you?
(Smiles) Don’t put me in a spot. See, if I mention names, it wouldn’t be fair to other people who are associated with that film. Besides that there are still a lot of people associated with the film who may not agree with my views. And I have to give them that respect because they gave me work at that time. Also when a film is made, a lot of hard work goes behind it. No one wants to make a flop film. Sometimes things don’t pan out as it was imagined. And when a film doesn’t do well it’s not the end of the road. See, this industry and for that matter everybody in life, thrives on hope.

Do you think your recent successes like Dasvi, Lost, A Thursday and Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga have widened your reach?
As an actor definitely yes. As I say it’s quite challenging to find your audience and the kind of shift I see in the audiences or whatever the way I read about myself I take it quite seriously. A lot of people feel, if it’s Yami’s film or if Yami is a part of the film, it must be something different, so let’s watch it. I respect my audience a lot and value their last verdict the most, that’s the most rewarding thing for me. As far as theatrical release is concerned that balance is also important. I am doing my job as an actor. I am giving you at least in my version or whatever you feel to say, a good performance or a decent performance.

OTT has widened the reach of audiences because in theatres you need a bigger success like URI for which 1.5 or 2 crore people should watch it, but on OTT it’s possible within a week, you don’t need 200 or 300 crore at the box office for that. So how can I do that? But yeah to be cast in a certain kind of film or with a certain director or with a certain budget film you need to be seen. I have done that in the past. So I feel that people like myself nothing will be the perfect point. There will always be something that we’ll have to keep proving ourselves one film after the other. So I have stopped thinking like that. About my job, what is in my control? The kind of scripts that I am associating with and if I am excited to be in a film. My director needs to equally be excited to work with me and that’s it. And as you said “A good film will find it’s way to the audience”.

You’ve been doing female centric roles recently. Are you consciously doing that?
You know very soon I think this term will also get away that “Female centric” films which I understand why it was coined. Because earlier we didn’t have many of these kinds of films. More than female centric film I consider them as a character driven film. I will never ask you to watch a film of mine which has me leading it because it’s a female oriented film or it talks about a social message. While that will be important but at the end of the day you are investing your time and money in that film, it needs to be a good script. It needs to be a film first.

I was leading a film like A Thursday. I see it with a lot of credibility and with the same emotion I think the audience embraces that film. I will never forget the kind of messages and calls I started getting after the press show. Personally I have never got that kind of response because we would wait for the film to be released then everyone expresses because of the embargo but they said we are not giving the review right now but we are telling you in person that you should have been a part of this press screening, everyone was speechless in the end and that’s my revert.

When you shoot movies back-to-back like URI or A Thursday, do you somewhere miss the characters that you played in Kaabil or Badlapur where you played the role of a sweet, innocent girl?
No, I don’t view my characters like that, I mean I have looked back at these films. No, I don’t miss that either. And I don’t endorse ‘I want to have the power in my hand’ type of roles. My job is to make sure that you don’t associate me in any bracket. Like you were saying you expected more from me and I assure you that when we meet for the next interview for the next film, you will have something different to see. I consider them as I said just for the effect of coming across as a strong person I will never do a film, it has to have some substance in it. And I still look back at Kaabil as a performance oriented role and that film I remember when it was released most of the people, even in the industry they came out saying or the way it was written. Some said ‘it was a small role’, but I didn’t consider it like that. I thought it was a very performance-oriented role and I’m very happy to have gotten that opportunity to play it and that’s how I look back at it same with my movie “A Thursday”.

The whole idea is to keep pushing myself and to keep doing something novel. Before every such film I have gotten nervous, When I started prepping for Bala, as much as a fun character it was, it made me nervous. Not the “will I be able to do” nervous. I know I can do it but how will I do it? So I have to sit and start preparing that’s what I think of a character and once it’s done, it’s all over you, then I am done, I have to move on. I don’t hold on to any character. I don’t want to hold onto any image that people liked me in a certain way, No! They liked that film, they liked that character I don’t think they want me to do more such films. Good films, and good films can be anything. It’s ambiguous, my favourite word.

About actors, there are lot of aspirations, you know when people see you on screen, you know they want to relate themselves with the character or they see a part of themselves in actors and now actors are available everywhere because on social media even if you are not posting something you are being clicked/papped with that and now with the increase in OTT, How do you keep yourself aspirational, with all the chaos around?

That is so correct and I think that is one of the reasons which also might not be working in favour of the actors. I personally think it might not be in favour of us for a very long time. There was an aspirational quality or aspect attached to it when you used to watch films or actors because of inaccessibility. You would just know them by their characters or what they were on screen. Now because you are being seen everywhere, being clicked everywhere, that charm of watching, is lesser. You know about me the easier for me it is to convince you about the character.

I don’t call anyone to click me. If they happen to be there that’s great. Or if it’s a part of a professional engagement I do, but beyond a point, no. I like to draw that line and for my own sanctity more than anything else my sanity. I think that’s very important to mark that line, that’s my job and this is where the job ends, I have my personal life. And to answer your question, the best conversation to have with your audience is through films. I think I have the ability to do my job there but the whole façade of creating a perception about yourself. How many fans you have? Are you getting mobbed? You have to get mobbed, you have to get clicked while getting mobbed, you have to trend on social media, you have to be seen there, I think there are just more and more distractions, that is how I see it. I don’t judge anyone who does it but when everyone starts doing it that’s a problem or someone has to write good things about me, do I have to pay that person? I don’t believe in that because if I have done a good job you will write about it and if you don’t feel, you won’t write. But I can make you aware of my film. We need that marketing that a film is releasing. I can’t tell you that you have to write this. I am stepping the line. So it’s a longer route but I feel it’s the correct one.

The post Yami Gautam Dhar : New OTT Queen! first appeared on Latest News, Breaking News, National News, World News, India News, Bollywood News, Business News, Politics News, Sports News, Entertainment News - CineBuster.

He, She They. Usually there are two #genders recognised as He or She but in the modern society They gender too is accepted by the society. The ‘#ThirdGender’ has been recognised by the passport office, railways, election cards etc. So there’s an awakening and acceptance to this gender. #Transgenders are genetically, biologically, and physiologically men who are also called #eunuchs, #transsexuals, and #transvestites in English and colloquially hijras, alis, kothis, double deckers, gud and panthis in India. Though ‘They’ are looked down upon by the major part of the society, there’s a film addressing their issues made by a writer and director #PallaviRoySharma titled ‘#Unwoman’. It’s lead actor Kanak Garg is also an ally of #LGBTQIA+ community who spoke to our senior editor Mr #KeertiKadam about the film and the the subject at hand.

How did you get connected with this film Unwoman?

Actually I belong to Jodhpur and after staying in multiple cities decided to come to Mumbai for my Masters’ degree in English Literature. I always was attracted to performing arts and I got a chance to do modelling while studying. I was a fashion model and have walked ramp for many designers. I believe that I am a storyteller at heart and to further that interest I started auditioning for films and shows.

In the meanwhile I came across an ad by a casting director Naren wherein he was looking out for artistes from NSD and/or FTII. I got in touch with him and he seemed reluctant saying that he was looking out for a raw Dehati looking girl. He thought that fashionable girl like me can not suit the role. But I sent him a few of my pictures in which I was without make up and the look was earthy and raw. He liked it and asked me to audition. I did but I was told that the role was allotted to someone else. I was going about my routine when after about a couple of months Naren asked me to send my audition tape, again. I am not a trained actor but I had done a good job in the tape. After a few days I got the good news that I was doing the film.

Later I came to know that Unwoman was about intersex character. Since I am an active member who works in close quarters for the transgender community, I was delighted to represent my community in a film. Though the role was challenging, I took it head on and started prepping for it. Mind you all this happened during the lockdown period through video calls. But once all of us met at Jodhpur for shoot everything was a smooth ride. We all rehearsed and stayed together till the shoot was complete.

How easy or difficult was it to do intimate scenes?

I always had a creative interaction with my director and things used to be clear. Also I must thank my co-actor Sarthak Narula, who plays my husband in the film, for relentless support offered during the shoot. We used to discuss the scenes before the shoot and that helped us remove the inhibitions doing intimate scenes. Also we had a intimacy director on sets. It helped me to understand how to ‘cheat’ before the camera. In fact now I am a full fledged Intimacy Coordinator and help production houses. Though sexual violence and violent scenes were difficult to perform.

I was given to understand beforehand about the intimate scenes as well as violence and nudity. But I was not aware of the degree of it. But our director has shot those scenes very aesthetically and never was I uncomfortable. This is my debut film but I never was exploited during the shoot.

What does the film want to convey?

Love. It’s a love story of a different kind. The movie will spread a message that every human being has a right to love whoever he or she wants to. Anybody can fall in love with anybody. Sex or sexual orientation is a personal thing and others do not have a right to question it. But we live in a society where there are boundaries and certain social behaviour expected by each one. The transgender community is looked down upon but they too are humans and have a right to all emotions. I believe that the society should follow, ‘Live and Let Live’, Jiyo Aur Jine Do’ policy.

There’s a case going on about same sex marriages. What are your views on that?

I think this is not new in our culture. It is considered that this has come from the western culture. But it is not so. We belong to an ancient society which boasts of Khajuraho and Kamasutra. Third gender community has been part of the society for ages. In fact in olden times the eunuchs were used to protect women folk by the kings. But the Britishers started ruling us and they brain washed our mentality that third sex gender was evil. Why queer community has to explain about their sexuality? I feel that a gender can not be only black and white. Gender is a spectrum.

What are your expectations from Unwoman?

Frankly speaking though it is my debut, dream debut, film I am not looking for instant stardom. While doing this film I felt that the story spoke to me at every moment. I was touched with the subject and I am glad the film is seeing light of the day. Our three years hard work is ultimately in front of all of you and I am representing LGBTQIA+ community is more engrossing for me.
