Celebrities attend Pasbaan-e- Adab’s 13th annual Hindustani Culture and Literature Festival ‘Meeraas’!

Famous literature and culture organisation Pasbaan-e- Adab organised its 13th annual Hindustani Culture and Literature Festival ‘Meeraas’ at YB Chavan Centre recently. Ustad Shujat Khan, the Grammy Award nominee for music showed his class through his sitar playing. The program also showcased the career building and progression opportunities for students by organising a counselling session with experts of different fields including life insurance, banking, medical, hotel management, education and art and literature.

Two sessions with famous actor Kanwaljit and Sachin Pilgaokar were held to drive home the point of success through consistent efforts for students and parents. Padma Shri awardees Ustad Ahmad Hussain and Ustad Mohammad Hussain enthralled the audience with their ghazal singing while Micky Nirula mesmerised them with Sufi scores.

Sachin Pilgaonkar, noted actor, director and a Shayar said after the performance, “Urdu is not only the imperative part of my life but also my body. I was born and brought up in entirely Marathi culture. I did not know any other language than Marathi. I had started acting in Hindi films as a child artist after having done a few Marathi films.. I was doing Hrishikesh Mukherjee directed Majali Didi. Hemant Desai was the producer of the film. Meena Kumari was palying Didi while I was playing orphan kid who called Meena Kumariji Didi. Meenaji once asked on the set that which language do I speak at home. I said, Marathi. She then asked when I speak Hindi. I said only on the sets. She asked me to take my parents along to the sets. I was a bit worried. I thought she wanted to complain about me. I was scared, same like school going children are when their parents are called to the school by teachers.”

He added, “When I called my parents to the set, Meenaji told them that I was a good actor but, my accent has Marathi tone when I speak Hindi. She said that speaking Urdu is must for me, My parents asked her that what should they do to improve his Hindi and learn Urdu. She told my parents that she will send a car for me and I should go to her home four times a week for two hours each. I was happy that I was getting a car every day. I would go to Juhu sitting in the rear seat of the car. I enjoyed those days. I would play table tennis for an hour and then learn Urdu from her for next one hour,” he said. Sachin further said that Meena Kumari was of the opinion that he should master the Urdu accent even if he could not learn to write the language.

This is just one of the several presentations to feature in the 13th Meeras, the popular annual event of poetry, music, drama, mushaira, career guidance and motivational talks

The drama Majaz Zinda Hai (script, design and direction by Salima Raza, and production by Ku- mud Mishra) will bring the romantic-revolutionary poet alive on stage. “This is just one of the several presentations to feature in the 13th Meeras, the popular annual to present a beautiful amalgamation of music and poetry. Whether it is motivational talks Mera Safar by actors Kanwaljit Singh and Sachin Pilgaonkar or poetry recitations by Javed Akhtar Sahab and many other poets. We have not compromiseed on quality,” said senior IPS officer and Pasbaan-e-Adab’s founder Quaiser Khalid.

He said, “The connoisseurs and lovers of literature and culture will love it. The response to the invitation for reciting at the mushaira was so overwhelming that the organisers had to keep mushairas in two sessions. Apart from Javed Akhtar, poets such as Sachin Pilgaonkar, Obaid Azam Azmi, Quaiser Khalid and Ranjit Chauhan will recite their poems.”

Khalid said an important component of the festival is talent hunt among students from many of 760 colleges in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and career counselling for youths by experts from various fi- elds. So, it is not just for the lovers of music and poetry, but also youths keen on learning about their career options.
