While social media has ways to get you addicted to it, actress #CharrulMalik says that since #YouTube lets you filter out what you want to watch, there is no addiction. She adds that YouTube has also been influential in giving so much work to vloggers, and it’s a field that many people want to get into now.

“YouTube has become a very good medium for people who want to watch, and people who live on their mobiles are quick to scroll YouTube, but I don’t think it is replacing TV. It’s a quick way to see videos that have a duration of ten to fifteen minutes. Vloggers have also got so much work through the platform that now it’s like everyone is a vlogger. So, there is no doubt about it, but a lot of negative content also keeps coming on YouTube, which is incomprehensible. It’s a good platform where we can watch anything at any point in time, wherever we are, whether we are travelling, working during our breaks, or doing whatever else is convenient,” she says.

She adds, “To be very frank, I don’t really watch too much on YouTube, but suggestions keep coming. I feel it is very easy to stop watching when you have to stop yourself. So, YouTube shorts are just fifteen or twenty seconds, and some of them are interesting. I know what I want to watch and so I don’t get affected or influenced by any suggestions. YouTube addiction is not real. I don’t think it should be called an addiction because on YouTube you just go and watch things or post like you’re looking at Instagram, and social media is what it is. It’s quick because you know who posted what. On YouTube, people don’t tag you. If I need to see a recipe, I just go to YouTube. Or if I have to see some news index, like I just had to see something about Chandrayaan, so I type Chandrayaan, so I came to YouTube.”

Ask her how she limits her YouTube viewing, and she says, “I have already limited it. I only watch what I feel like watching. I don’t watch anything randomly. I know what I want to watch, and of course there are not more than a couple of videos. That’s it; I’m done. I don’t watch more than a couple of videos a day on YouTube, especially when I have to learn a recipe. I go somewhere or I have to see something special, something knowledgeable that I don’t see in the news, so I have to see its background or see something. I don’t really watch anything else on YouTube.”

She adds, “Recently, I had a lot of walnuts at home and I didn’t know what to cook. I went on YouTube, I learned, and I made halwa. I have received so many compliments from all the family members. I’m happy. That’s all I see. On YouTube, I see recipes and something about cooking. Since I’m not a very good cook and I don’t have much passion for cooking. But when I make it, I watch three or four videos on YouTube. How does one create something different?”
