Consulate-General of Japan Organise Bonsai & Origami Art Exhibition at Jijamata Udyan, Mumbai!
The BMC and the Tree Authority, in collaboration with the Consulate-General of Japan in Mumbai, inaugurated the first-ever Bonsai and Origami Art Exhibition at Jijamata Udyan, Byculla. The exhibition opened on Friday 28th Nov. and will remain open to the public with free entry until Sunday, 30 November, from 10 AM to 6 PM.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by #MrKojiYagi, Consul General of Japan in Mumbai, and Mr. Jitendra Pardeshi, Superintendent of Gardens, BMC. This unique exhibition celebrates the artistic bond and cultural harmony between India and Japan, showcasing the delicate beauty of Bonsai trees and the intricate craftsmanship of Origami.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Koji Yagi said:
“Under the Sister City initiative, Mumbai and Yokohama were connected in 1965, and this exhibition commemorates 60 years of that relationship. I encourage all Mumbai residents to visit this eco-friendly exhibition. The Origami showcase includes models of animals, birds, flowers, and tools—each crafted entirely from paper.”
Speaking about the initiative, #MrJitendraPardeshi urged families to bring their children to experience this artistic and educational display. He added that Bonsai are beautiful miniature plants that can be grown at home, offering both aesthetic and environmental benefits.
The exhibition features over 300 varieties of Bonsai, along with an extensive display of Origami artworks created by expert artists. The showcase is supported by the Bonsai Study Group of the Indo-Japanese Association and Origami Mitra.
The BMC has been hosting plant and flower exhibitions for the last 27 years, and its annual flower show scheduled for February 2026 remains one of the city’s most anticipated events.
Film and television actress and social media influencer #EktaJain also attended the event and praised the initiative. She highlighted that growing even a few plants at home is one of the most effective steps individuals can take to combat air pollution.
This first-of-its-kind showcase offers a rare opportunity for Mumbaikars to witness Japanese artistry blended with India’s green initiatives — a cultural experience that is visually enriching, educational, and environmentally meaningful.
