Danny Boyle passes the directorial reins to Nia DaCosta for ’28 Days Later: The Bone Temple’!

After re-defining modern horror in 2002, the franchise of 28 Days Later returns with a new chapter, further exploring its universe. However this time, Danny Boyle hands over the director’s chair to Nia DaCosta marking a major creative shift for the upcoming installment of the franchise, #28DaysLaterTheBoneTemple.

Reflecting on the decision, Danny Boyle expressed full confidence in Nia DaCosta’s vision, calling her “the perfect choice” to carry forward the essence of the franchise. He says that both writer Alex Garland and himself had been following DaCosta’s work pretty closely and were particularly impressed with her bold reimagination of Candyman and said they recognised that she had “serious horror chops and a genuine love for the original 28 days later”.

According to Boyle, DaCosta’s approach maintains a rare balance in adding her own vision as the director while respecting the legacy of the franchise, while pushing it into darker, more intense territory. “She honors what fans love about the franchise while making the new film her own, taking the series into even darker, more intense areas.”, Boyle said, hinting at a chapter that doesn’t rely just on nostalgia alone but instead further evolves the mythology in unsettling new ways.

As 28 Days Later: The Bone Temple moves closer to release, Boyle’s statement proves that this decision was not just him passing the baton but a leap of faith in a fellow filmmaker who he knows is worthy of carry forwarding the franchise, promising to be darker, bolder, and more relentless than ever before.

Sony Pictures Entertainment India releases 28 Days Later: The Bone Temple in India on 16th January 2026.
