Deva

Review : DEVA : An action-packed thriller and a masala entertainer!

Bollywood has finally succeeded in combining two genres, viz action-packed thrills and a masala entertainment, and the result is ‘Deva’. The film, starring #ShahidKapoor, #PoojaHegde and #PavailGulati in the lead roles, is the Hindi remake of the 2013 Malayalam film, ‘#MumbaiPolice’. With Rosshan Andrrews reprising his role as the director and a supporting cast consisting of Pravessh Rana, Kubbra Sait, Girish Kulkarni, etc., the film is a rollercoaster with several twists and turns.

The film portrays the story of three police officers Dev Ambre (Shahid Kapoor), Rohan D’silva (Pavail Gulati) and Farhan Khan (Pravessh Rana) who are in the pursuit of a notorious gangster Prabhat Jadhav (Manish Wadhwa). The officers share a sense of friendship and brotherhood while Diya Sathaye (Pooja Hegde) plays the role of Dev’s love interest. Being a crime journalist, she works closely with Dev to discover the loopholes in the system and track Prabhat Jadhav. Although the police succeed in taking Prabhat Jadhav down, the encounter is followed by the murder of Officer Rohan D’silva. What follows is Dev’s investigation of the case, stories of betrayal and an unimaginable climax.

Shahid Kapoor is the star of ‘Deva’, with an attitude and consistent energy that he carries throughout the film. His killer dance moves and unmatchable energy in the song ‘Bhasad Macha’ take us back to his performance in ‘Dhan Te Nan’. Be it the action sequences, comedic scenes or emotional setups, Kapoor excels in every frame and establishes his acting prowess yet again. Pooja Hegde looks gorgeous and delivers a subtle portrayal of a passionate journalist. Pavail Gulati and Pravessh Rana breathe life into their roles and churn out exceptional performances. Kubbra Sait, Girish Kulkarni and other cast members provide remarkable support. Speaking of the Marathi actors, Upendra Limaye takes the cake with his short role whereas Gaurav More makes a blink-and-you-miss-it appearance.

Rosshan Andrrews shines in his Bollywood directorial debut, as he not only creates a stylish action film but also succeeds in extracting excellent performances from each cast member. The screenplay is fast-paced and the dialogues are powerful. The music and BGM complement Dev’s energy and leverage the suspense of the film. ‘Deva’ is a mass entertainer and an edge-of-the-seat thriller. It is a tale of duty, friendship and brotherhood and a must-watch film.
