Veteran of Reality Shows, Gajendra Singh, Remembers O. P. Nayyar on His 100th Birth Anniversary!
Today marks the 100th birth anniversary of the legendary O. P. Nayyar Sahib, a name that does not merely belong to the history of Indian music but lives vibrantly in its soul. On this momentous day, emotions run deep—of pride, reverence, gratitude, and an overwhelming sense of having witnessed greatness up close.
O. P. Nayyar was far more than a music composer; he was the heartbeat of an era. A rare and fearless genius, he rewrote the grammar of Hindi film music with his unmistakable rhythm, infectious energy, and joyful melodies. His compositions did not just entertain—they uplifted, energized, and awakened something deeply human. Even today, a single rhythm from an O. P. Nayyar song is enough to spark memories, bring smiles, and remind us why music is divine.
In a conversation with a veteran of reality shows, #GajendraSingh, he says, “My association with Nayyar Sahib during Sa Re Ga Ma, where he graced the show as a revered judge, remains one of the greatest blessings of my life. His presence carried dignity and grace. He guided young talent with a unique blend of firmness, affection, and honesty—leaving an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to be in his presence.”
He further adds, “I vividly remember moments that define his stature and humility. Sonu Nigam, one of the finest voices and most gracious human beings of our time, would invite Nayyar Sahib onto the stage and humbly touch his feet to seek blessings. Shaan, another exceptional artist and beautiful soul, absorbed his wisdom with love and admiration. Through such artists, Nayyar Sahib’s inspiration seamlessly flowed into newer generations.”

Remembering through these memories, Gajji (as he is known as) adds, “For nearly ten invaluable years, I was blessed to be closely associated with him. Beyond studios and stages, we shared life. Sunday lunches together became sacred rituals—filled with stories from a golden era, music, humour, wisdom, and blessings. Those afternoons were not just meals; they were lessons in grace and love. As I reflect today, my eyes grow moist and my heart feels full. The bond, the laughter, the silences, the musical debates, and the affection come rushing back. These are lifetime experiences—impossible to forget, impossible to replace.”
