13 Years of Director Atlee: What’s Next for the Master Storyteller?

Marking 13 years since his directorial debut with Raja Rani at just 26, Atlee has built a formidable filmography with blockbusters like Theri, Mersal, Bigil, and Jawan. With every project, his canvas has continuously expanded—taking his signature blend of high-octane drama, emotional depth, and mass spectacle from Tamil cinema to a massive pan-India audience.

Now, Raaka represents what the next chapter looks like for Atlee. Directed by Atlee and starring Icon Star Allu Arjun, the film brings together two major forces of Indian cinema for an ambitious project that aims to take Indian storytelling to a larger, global canvas. Produced by Sun Pictures, Raaka is shaping up to be another major milestone in Atlee’s evolution as a filmmaker.

Even before its release, Raaka has already made history by securing a Guinness World Records title for “Most People Motion-Captured in Real-Time”. A total of 37 performers, ranging from a 4-year-old child to a 70-year-old, were motion-captured simultaneously in real time during a single session. The achievement was accomplished in February 2026 and officially certified by Guinness World Records on September 15, 2026 — adding another global milestone to the film.

From a 26-year-old filmmaker making Raja Rani to working with Vijay and Shah Rukh Khan, and now bringing Raaka to the screen with Allu Arjun, Atlee’s 13-year journey has been about constantly pushing boundaries. With Raaka, he is taking Indian cinema to a bigger, global canvas, creating a spectacle that aims to showcase the scale, technology and storytelling of Indian cinema to audiences worldwide.
