Teachers Day Special- Sharman Joshi, Sushmita Sen to Rani Mukherjee Bollywood Actors Who Stepped Into the Shoes of Teachers On Screen
From Rani Mukerji’s inspiring Naina Mathur to Aamir Khan’s compassionate Ram Shankar Nikumbh, these on-screen educators taught us lessons that went far beyond the classroom
Educators have always occupied a deeply revered space in society, influencing how we perceive, learn, and navigate life. Indian cinema has frequently honored this sacred bond between mentors and students through iconic characters who looked beyond syllabus boundaries to become true guiding lights. On this Teachers’ Day, we highlight Bollywood actors who portrayed unforgettable teachers and mentors on the silver screen.
Rani Mukerji – Hichki
Rani Mukerji delivered a memorable performance as Naina Mathur in Hichki, a teacher who refuses to let Tourette syndrome stand in the way of her dream of teaching. Taking on a challenging class of underprivileged students, Naina gradually earns their trust and encourages them to recognize their own potential. Her journey beautifully captures how a teacher’s belief in their students can become the first step towards their confidence.
#SharmanJoshi – Medical Dreams
In the TVF series Medical Dreams, Sharman Joshi took on the role of Subrat Sinha, a Biology teacher who guides three NEET aspirants through the pressures and challenges of preparing for one of India’s toughest entrance examinations. Beyond academics, Subrat becomes a mentor who offers practical advice, motivation and perspective as the students navigate their dreams and personal struggles.
#HrithikRoshan – Super 30
Hrithik Roshan stepped into the shoes of mathematician and educator Anand Kumar in Super 30. The film follows Anand’s efforts to mentor underprivileged students and help them prepare for the IIT entrance examinations. His portrayal highlighted the dedication of a teacher who sees education as a means of opening doors and creating opportunities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
#AamirKhan – Taare Zameen Par
Few teacher characters have resonated as deeply as Aamir Khan’s Ram Shankar Nikumbh from Taare Zameen Par. As an art teacher, Nikumbh recognises that young Ishaan’s academic struggles stem from dyslexia and chooses to understand the child rather than judge him. Through empathy and creative teaching methods, he helps Ishaan rediscover his confidence and realise his artistic potential.
#SushmitaSen – Main Hoon Na
Sushmita Sen brought glamour, warmth and charm to the classroom as Chandni Chopra, a Chemistry teacher in Main Hoon Na. Her character quickly became one of the most memorable teachers in Bollywood, balancing her poised personality with a warm equation with her students. Chandni’s presence added a memorable dose of school nostalgia and romance to the Farah Khan directorial.
Whether it was Naina Mathur encouraging students to believe in themselves, Subrat Sinha guiding aspiring doctors, Anand Kumar opening doors through education, Ram Shankar Nikumbh understanding a child beyond his grades or Chandni Chopra becoming an unforgettable classroom presence, these characters showed that teachers can leave an impact that lasts far beyond the classroom.
This Teachers’ Day, these performances serve as a reminder that some of the most memorable lessons in cinema were never just about what was written on the blackboard they were about confidence, empathy, resilience and believing in the potential of others.
