Grandson of Freedom Fighter Barrister M.Y. Nurie Joins August Kranti Day Commemoration at Mumbai’s Gowalia Tank!

Marking the Quit India Movement anniversary, social figures, political leaders, and descendants of freedom fighters gather at August Kranti Maidan to honor national martyrs and call for unity.

MUMBAI: Marking August Kranti Day (Quit India Movement anniversary), social figures, political leaders, and descendants of freedom fighters gathered at Mumbai’s historic Gowalia Tank (August Kranti Maidan) to pay tribute to the martyrs of India’s independence movement.

Among the key attendees was Owais Nurie, grandson of renowned freedom fighter and former PWD Minister of Bombay State, Barrister Mohammed Yasin (M.Y.) Nurie.

Call for Unity Amid Patriotic Chants
Participants at the rally paid floral tributes and raised patriotic slogans, urging citizens to remain united across religious and caste lines (“धर्म और जाति के नाम पर नहीं बटेंगे”) while honoring iconic leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Speaking to reporters at the rally, Owais Nurie recalled the historical events of August 1942:

“Following the Quit India resolution on August 8, 1942, my grandfather Barrister M.Y. Nurie and 51 other prominent Congress Working Committee leaders—including Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Morarji Desai, B.G. Kher, and S.K. Patil—were arrested from Colaba on the morning of August 9. They were taken to Ahmednagar Fort Jail, where they remained imprisoned for over two years.”

Nurie highlighted that the gathering served to remember the sacrifices that reshaped India’s freedom struggle, showing the British government that independence was inevitable. He urged modern political leaders across party lines to unite around national progress, mirroring the selfless vision of Mahatma Gandhi and Lokmanya Tilak.
