Bringing the Bhaukaal Intact to the Big Screen: ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ Aims for Adults Only Rating Without Diluting Its Grit
The highly anticipated teaser for Mirzapur: The Movie recently made its debut, offering viewers a thrilling first glance at the franchise’s cinematic transition. Transporting the iconic crime saga from streaming platforms to the silver screen, the film guarantees massive set pieces, elevated emotional stakes, and the signature grit that turned the property into an absolute phenomenon.
India’s biggest OTT crime franchise is all set to make history with Mirzapur: The Movie, becoming the first major Indian streaming originals to transition to the big screen on such a grand scale. Starring Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, and Divyenndu Sharma as their much-loved characters, the film brings the world of Mirzapur to cinemas while retaining the essence that made it a cultural phenomenon. The recently released teaser has sparked tremendous excitement, dominating social media conversations and further amplifying anticipation among fans.
With the theatrical release drawing closer, discussions have emerged around how a franchise known for its raw violence, bold language, and uncompromising storytelling will adapt to CBFC regulations. Addressing these concerns, director Gurmmeet Singh revealed that preserving Mirzapur’s authenticity remained the team’s biggest priority. Rather than toning down the film to chase a wider certification, the makers developed it with an Adults Only rating in mind, ensuring the franchise’s gritty identity stayed intact while adhering to the board’s certification guidelines.
Director Gurmmeet Singh revealed, “We’re targeting an Adults Only certification straight away. Then, of course, the CBFC has its own guidelines regarding language, what we can say, and what we can’t. We’ve tried to manage that and strike the right balance.”
Director Gurmmeet Singh believes Indian cinema has evolved significantly, with theatres now welcoming stories that cater specifically to adult audiences without compromising creative vision, adding, “I also think audiences have matured. If you look at films like ‘Animal,’ ‘Dhurandhar,’ and several other recent releases, you can see that adult storytelling is now finding space in theatres. I think that has also set a precedent, allowing us to bring something like ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ to the big screen without watering it down.”
Further expanding the ensemble, Mirzapur: The Movie features Abhishek Banerjee, Rasika Dugal, Mohitt Maalik, Sheeba Chadha, Rajesh Tailang, Pramod Pathak, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Harshita Shekhar Gaur, Shweta Tripathi, and Sonal S Chauhan, coming together to bring to life an epic untold chapter from the world of Mirzapur.
Mirzapur: The Movie is presented by Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment. Directed by Gurmmeet Singh, written by Puneet Krishna, and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under Excel Entertainment and co-produced by Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani, the film is slated for a grand theatrical release on 4th September 2026. Bringing the bhaukaal to an even wider audience, Mirzapur: The Movie will be released in Hindi and Telugu.
