Review : Horror-comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 scores at comedy but…..!

Released in 2007, #AkshayKumar and #VidyaBalan starrer, #BhoolBhulaiyaa was a smash hit. In fact it attained a cult status too. #BhoolBhulaiyaa2 tries to recreate the similar magic and is somewhat successful. Though the title suggests that it’s a sequel but it’s not. BB2 narrates a different story and the only common link is  Manjulika. Both the films have different characters and storyline. Of course, there’ll be comparisons but this #KartikAaryan and #KiaraAdvani starrer don’t disappoint. Director #AneesBazmee has inducted newer elements of thrill, with the help of writer #AakashKaushik, but the film does well only on comedy front.

The story of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 happens in the sand dunes of Rajasthan. At one of the hill stations Ruhan Randhawa (Kartik Aaryan) meets Reet Thakur (Kiara Advani) and there are sparks from both the sides. After song and dance with a few kisses they land up at an old Haveli. It’s believed that Manjulika’s spirit resides there which has been kept captive for almost two decades. He saves Anjulika from the clutches of a spirit/ghost and people start calling him Rooh Baba. Reet’s family is under the impression that she’s dead and Ruhan turns into a Rooh Baba who is believed to converse with the ghosts. One thing leads to another and Manjulika’s secret unfolds.

Aakash Kaushik’s screenplay though unconvincing holds it’s ground. It looks like that the logic seems to have tossed up before the shoot. The dialogues are witty and collect a lot of intermittent laughter. Anees Bazmee is known for his comic sense (Welcome, No Entry, Welcome Back etc) and scores heavily in that department. He has avoided unnecessary gimmicks to scare audiences and has done a decent job in that department. The comedy scenes keep you engrossed but the climax is bundled up. Aami Je Tomar from the original has been used as an effective background music and Teri Aankhen Bhool Bhulaiyaa song is recreated for the end credits which displays Kartik Aaryan’s dancing prowess.

Kartik Aaryan has delivered a decent performance in his casual style and with superb comic timing collects plenty of laughters. Kiara Advani looks gorgeous is every frame and has delivered a decent performance too. But the lack of chemistry between the two disturbs the romantic scenes. Tabu has a major role in this film and in the second half she controls the proceedings. She has delivered an amazingly good performance as well. The supporting cast Sanjay Mishra, Ashwini Kalsekar, Rajesh Sharma, Rajpal Yadav give some hilarious moments. Sanjay Mishra’s one-liners are intelligent and humorous.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 scores heavily on comedy front but has a weak horror plot.
