Review: Hum Angrezo Ke Zamane Ke Jailer Hain – A Murder Mystery Laced with Comedy

Veteran actor Asrani has entertained audiences for more than five decades with his impeccable comic timing and memorable performances. Hum Angrezo Ke Zamane Ke Jailer Hain, regarded as his last film, arrives as an emotional farewell for fans who have grown up watching the legendary actor on the big screen. Directed by Rakesh Sawant, the film combines comedy, drama, and suspense, attempting to create a wholesome entertainer. While the title itself evokes nostalgia associated with Asrani’s iconic “jailer” image, the film presents him in a murder mystery that unfolds with several twists and turns.

The story revolves around Thakur Vishwajeet Singh (Milind Gunaji) and his wife (Zarina Wahab), whose seemingly normal family life is shaken after the murder of their prospective son-in-law. As suspicion begins to fall on members of the family, the case lands in the hands of Inspector Dev (Asrani) and Inspector Rana (Bhanwar Singh Pundir). As the investigation progresses, hidden secrets come to light and a series of mysterious developments keep the audience guessing. The narrative gradually moves towards a climax that attempts to surprise viewers with an unexpected revelation.

The film’s biggest strength is undoubtedly Asrani, whose effortless screen presence and comic flair remind audiences why he remains one of Indian cinema’s most beloved actors. Bhanwar Singh Pundir emerges as a pleasant surprise and delivers a sincere performance as Inspector Rana. His chemistry with Asrani adds several engaging moments to the narrative. Milind Gunaji and Zarina Wahab lend maturity and credibility to their characters, while Mushtaq Khan contributes effectively with his trademark humour.

The story offers enough intrigue to keep viewers invested, although some twists could have been developed with greater depth. The screenplay maintains a steady pace and successfully blends comedy with suspense. Dialogues are simple yet effective, with a few humorous exchanges standing out. The music complements the narrative without becoming intrusive, while the cinematography captures the mood of the mystery adequately. Director Rakesh Sawant deserves credit for attempting a genre mix of thriller, drama, and comedy while ensuring that the narrative remains accessible to family audiences.

Overall, Hum Angrezo Ke Zamane Ke Jailer Hain serves as a fitting farewell to Asrani, supported by a competent cast and an entertaining murder mystery that delivers light-hearted fun along with suspense.
