Why David Fincher Did Not Return to Direct The Social Reckoning: Aaron Sorkin Sheds Light!

Aaron Sorkin returns to the world of Facebook with The Social Reckoning. After writing the critically acclaimed The Social Network, Sorkin steps up to direct this new chapter himself. However, as fan anticipation builds, Sorkin candidly revealed that he wasn’t his own first choice to take the helm—he originally hoped original director David Fincher would return to lead the project.

“I was my second choice to direct it,” Sorkin in a recent interview. “I wanted David to direct it, but [he] couldn’t.” He revealed that David couldn’t direct the film because of his exclusive deal with Netflix. “Even if he could have somehow gotten Netflix’s permission to go work at Sony, I didn’t want The Social Reckoning to come out a year after the midterm elections. I didn’t think we were going to be in the mood anymore. I wanted it to come out now,” he said. Sorkin also revealed he sent the script to Fincher when he completed it.

“[Fincher] was the first person to read the script,” continued Sorkin. “He’s been a very enthusiastic support person, and he was talking about how it’s not going to be hard to do this movie, and the only person really who could bend us over a table is Jesse, and we just all assumed Jesse was going [to play Zuckerberg again].”

Based on the events that gave rise to the Wall Street Journal’s shocking 2021 investigative series, ‘The Facebook Files’, the film tells the true story of Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison), a young Facebook engineer, who enlists the help of Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White), a Wall Street Journal reporter, to go on a dangerous journey that ends up blowing the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.

Sony Pictures Entertainment India will release The Social Reckoning exclusively in English in theatres on 9th October.
