Director Zach Cregger Incorporated These Inputs From Fans Into Resident Evil: ‘I Liked the Movie a Lot More’!

Director Zach Cregger reveals how test audience feedback helped refine the tone of the upcoming survival horror reboot, arriving in cinemas on September 18.

Resident Evil is gearing up to reinvent the survival horror genre on the big screen, standing as one of the most anticipated releases of the year. The legendary franchise is set to return under the vision of acclaimed filmmaker Zach Cregger (Barbarian, Weapons).

While Cregger’s previous films expertly balanced horror with dark comedy, early test screenings for Resident Evil revealed that audiences preferred a leaner, scarier experience—prompting the director to recalibrate the final cut.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Cregger shared: “I learned that people really liked the movie, but they thought it was too funny. So over the course of my testing, I stripped out as much of the jokes as possible. I then found that not only did the audience enjoy the movie more, but I also liked the movie a lot more. A little bit of humour goes a long way in a horror movie, and there’s not a single joke I took out of this movie that I miss.”

In this all-new original story, the film follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses into chaos.

Release Details: Presented by Columbia Pictures and Constantin Film in association with TriStar Pictures, Resident Evil arrives in theatres on September 18, 2026. Distributed by Sony Pictures Entertainment India, the film will release across India in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
