Divyenndu On “Vintage” Mirzapur, “Because It’s a Film, It’s On a Much Bigger Cinematic Canvas”!
Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment are adapting one of India’s most celebrated OTT franchises for the big screen. Mirzapur: The Movie, arriving in theatres on 4 September 2026, will expand the franchise’s brutal, fan‑beloved universe into a larger cinematic format.
The film promises amplified action, bigger set pieces, fresh twists and heightened conflict — a Mirzapur experience scaled up for cinema. Speaking about returning as Munna Bhaiya, Divyenndu said the movie will deliver the feel of “vintage” Mirzapur. “We’re coming all guns blazing,” he said. “You’ll recognise the same characters from season one, but they’re in different circumstances. Because it’s a film, it’s on a much bigger cinematic canvas — made truly for the fans.”
Reflecting on the passionate audience response to Munna Bhaiya, Divyenndu admitted he’s still amazed by the character’s popularity. He recalled how fans continued to long for the character after his fate in season three, making emotional reels and calls for his return. On preparing to reprise the role, he explained the creative dilemma he faced: whether to reinvent Munna or recapture his original portrayal, a question that made him “a little shifty at the start.”
Divyenndu also predicted the film could be historic commercially. “It could be a revolution in revenue models,” he said, noting that many will watch to see whether a hit OTT series can successfully translate into a theatrical event. Given Mirzapur’s unpredictable rise the first time, he believes the movie has the potential to do something landmark.
Mirzapur: The Movie is presented by Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment, directed by Gurmeet Singh, written by Puneet Krishna, and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under Excel Entertainment. The film releases worldwide on 4 September 2026.
