“Gym Gave Me Size, Kalaripayattu Gave Me Agility”: Rohit Saraf Opens Up About His 15-Month Physical Transformation for The Revolutionaries!
Actor Rohit Saraf has been making serious waves with his performance in director Nikkhil Advani’s period drama series, The Revolutionaries. Stepping away from the romantic, boy-next-door roles that previously defined his career, Saraf portrays the fierce freedom fighter Sachindranath Sanyal, a role that demanded an intense 15-month physical transformation to reflect the resilience and agility of a young revolutionary.
Building Sturdiness & Emotional Depth
Reflecting on his preparation, Saraf shared that the physical build was only one layer of embodying Sachindranath Sanyal:
“I knew very early on that if I only looked stronger, it wouldn’t necessarily make me believable as Sachin. I had to feel different in my body. There was a certain sturdiness I associated with him, not just physical strength, but the sense of someone who could withstand discomfort. These were young men living under extraordinary circumstances—training, hiding, fighting, surviving with very little, and still carrying on.”
Saraf emphasized that as he grew physically stronger, it allowed him to explore the character’s emotional nuances without losing his sense of toughness:
“His conviction didn’t exist because he was devoid of fear, tenderness or innocence. It existed alongside all of those things. There’s something almost childlike about believing in an idea so completely that you’re willing to reorganise your entire life around it. That contradiction became one of my favourite things about playing him: someone who could be incredibly vulnerable and still completely immovable when it came to what he believed was right.”
The Multi-Disciplinary Regime: Gym, Kalari, & Diets
To build an authentic physique, Saraf engaged in a mix of strength conditioning, action rehearsals, dance, and traditional martial arts:
Gym Training: Provided the required size and muscular foundation.
Kalaripayattu: Developed operational agility, balance, and body control.
Action & Movement Rehearsals: Taught him how to effectively apply strength during combat sequences.
“The funniest reality check was discovering that being able to lift heavy in a gym means absolutely nothing when someone asks you to do Kalari. Suddenly you’re on the floor questioning every claim you’ve ever made about being fit!” Saraf joked.
Addressing his diet, he noted that the transformation ranged from surplus eating to extreme calorie cuts:
“There was a phase where I had to eat so much that I genuinely never wanted to see another meal again… And then, of course, you get used to eating like that and they decide it’s time to cut your calories. So you’re basically never happy.”
Trainer Tejas Lalwani Details the 15-Month Routine
Saraf’s celebrity trainer, Tejas Lalwani, lauded the actor’s unwavering commitment and discipline throughout the grueling schedule:
Diet & Calorie Fluctuations: Escalated to 3,500+ calories during the bulking phase down to sub-1,800 calories during the shredding phase.
Natural Transformation: Achieved completely clean—without stacks, diuretics, or drastic salt cuts—utilizing real food, plant protein, fish oil, and creatine monohydrate.
Multi-Skill Workload: Balanced physical conditioning alongside long shooting hours, script readings, and training in Kalaripayattu, Laathi, Kushti, Mallakhamba, and dance.
“Rohit’s discipline was next level. He was essentially living the life of a Men’s Physique competitor while carrying an actor’s workload,” said Lalwani. “He looked so striking that what was initially planned as one or two body shots evolved into multiple scenes. The transformation gave the director a lot more to play with visually.”
Breaking the Typecast
Speaking about taking on a role so distinct from his previous image, Saraf expressed gratitude for director Nikkhil Advani’s vision:
“Most people had seen me do certain kind of parts before and I understand why Sachin wouldn’t necessarily be the first character somebody would associate with me. That thought itself became quite exciting—I had an opportunity to challenge the typecast. What I’ve realised is that there really are no limits as an actor as long as there is belief.”
Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Rohit Saraf, Pratibha Ranta, Bhuvan Bam, and Gurfateh Pirzada, The Revolutionaries offers a compelling look into India’s pre-independence struggle and continues to receive praise for its historical narrative and performances.
