The film is based on Asghar Wajahat’s celebrated 1989 play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya Vo Jamya Ei Nai, one of the most humane accounts of Partition. The story unfolds in Lahore, where the Mirza family, Sikandar (Sunny Deol), his wife Hamida (Preity Zinta), their son (Karan Deol) and young daughter (Khhushi Hajare) arrives after their home is destroyed by rioters and they are allotted a haveli left behind by a Hindu family. But the house is still occupied by Durgawati, or Mai (Shabana Azmi), an elderly Hindu woman who refuses to leave because she is waiting for her son and his family to return home. Nobody has the courage to tell her that they have perished in the riots. The resulting conflict inside the haveli becomes a reflection of the larger conflict outside it. Matters are further aggravated by a communal troublemaker, played by Abhimanyu Singh, who openly threatens the remaining Hindus and objects to their puja and Diwali celebrations.

The greatest strength of Batwara 1947 is its source material, because Wajahat’s play carries an inherently powerful argument against communal hatred. The film retains the central ideas—no religion is inherently evil, hatred can be defeated by love, religion should not be mixed with politics, and humanity is the greatest religion. However, the writing and treatment often turn these ideas into direct statements rather than allowing them to emerge organically from the characters and situations. The dialogue frequently feels stage-bound and predictable, with the good and bad representatives of both communities neatly positioned on either side. Director Rajkumar Santoshii manages some effective moments, particularly in the scenes involving Mai and the Mirza family, but the film needed a more contemporary cinematic treatment to match the timelessness of its source.

Sunny Deol brings his familiar intensity and still has the ability to make his roar work, while Preity Zinta delivers a sincere performance. Karan Deol is effective in his part, and Abhimanyu Singh convincingly embodies the menace of communal extremism. Child artist Khhushi Hajare too delivers a good performance. But it is Shabana Azmi who owns the film. As Mai, she finds the precise balance between theatricality and melodrama, giving the character dignity, vulnerability and emotional strength. Batwara 1947 has an important message and a remarkable foundation, but instead of making us feel the pain and absurdity of Partition, it too often tells us what we are supposed to feel.

The emotional depth of the film hit exceptionally close to home for its lead star. Sunny Deol revealed that his family had an emotional reaction after watching his upcoming film Batwara 1947. His mother, Prakash Kaur, broke down in tears after the screening. Speaking about their response during an interview, the actor shared that the film’s themes of family, pain and humanity struck a chord with everyone at home.

He said, “They have seen the film. They all loved it, because it is a very emotional film.” When asked about his mother’s reaction, he added, “She was in tears. Everybody was in tears, because the film is about family and humanity. It is about the pain and agony a person goes through, and still wants to survive and fight for one another. The end shows the victory of humanity. That is the beauty of the film.”

Highlighting how the story captures familial dynamics during moments of crisis, his co-star Preity Zinta echoed the sentiment, saying the film explores how different members of a family respond to the same crisis in their own way. She said, “It is about how different people in the family react to the same situation. The younger blood thinks differently, as they think they can change the world. The mother just wants to bring the family together, and the father is the protector, but he also stands up for what he believes in. Sometimes what you believe in can be completely contrasting to what is good for you. It is also about having a backbone and being able to see yourself face to face in the mirror. There are so many parts to it.”

Aamir Khan Productions’ Batwara 1947, starring Shabana Azmi, #SunnyDeol, and Preity G Zinta is gearing up for one of the biggest cinematic releases of the year. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the Partition-era drama has been creating massive excitement across the nation. As the team officially launches its multi-city promotional campaign, lead star Sunny Deol has arrived in Jaipur, staying at the heritage landmark Rambagh Palace, bringing a deeply sentimental, full-circle moment to the fore.

Decades ago, when Rajkumar Santoshi was looking to launch his directorial career with Ghayal, he narrated the legendary script to veteran icon Dharmendra at this very same location, Rambagh Palace. Dharmendra went on to produce the film, which turned out to be an all-time classic, solidifying Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi as one of the most formidable director-actor duos in Indian cinema. Now, almost three decades later, the promotions for their reunion project Batwara 1947 have officially started from the exact same setting where their glorious journey together first took root.

Recalling those nostalgic memories in a video recorded at Rambagh Palace, director Rajkumar Santoshi shared, “Hum yahan 87, June-July ki baarish mein… Dharm sir se mile the aur wahan se hamari Ghayal ki journey shuru hui. Aaj wapas yeh woh shubh jagah hai jahan se shubh kaam shuru hua.”

Sunny Deol echoed his sentiments, reflecting on how special it is to return to the location that started it all. Taking to his social media, Sunny shared an emotional post writing, “Some journeys come full circle in ways you can never plan. Years ago, I believed deeply in a script written by a young Rajkumar Santoshi. We tried taking it to producers, but no one was ready to back the film. That was when I decided to take it to Papa. Papa was shooting for Batwara in 1988 in Jaipur and staying at Rambagh Palace. Raj gave him the complete narration of Ghayal, and the moment it ended, Papa said yes. More than the film, what stayed with me was how proud he was that I had recognised and stood by such a powerful story. That faith became Ghayal. And now, all these years later, I returned to Jaipur for the first promotions of Batwara 1947. Papa’s Batwara (1989) . My #Batwara1947 (2026). The same city. A lifetime of memories. And a circle that feels beautifully complete. Forever grateful to Papa for believing in my instinct, and to Raj for giving me a story worth fighting for. ”
